PM Narendra Modi to visit Ukraine, confirms MEA; will be his first visit since Russian invasion
Ukraine, the External Affairs Ministry said today. It will be Modi's first trip to the war-torn country since its conflict with Russia and about a month after he met President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. Details of the trip will be shared later in the day, Reuters reported quoting the foreign ministry. Modi is expected to visit Ukraine between August 21 and 23, ET had reported earlier. It comes just over a month after Modi visited Russia and Austria. Western capitals have imposed sanctions on Moscow following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, but friendly nations such as India and China have continued to trade with it.

prisoners of war whose fate moved crowds. He was serving time for assault in a prison in the Kherson region in southern Ukraine when Russian troops took control of the area in 2022. Ahead of the liberation of the territory by Ukrainian forces later that year, Russian forces moved him inside Russia — to Yulia's despair and to general indifference.

Gold rises $2,500 for first time on outlook for lower rates
Gold topped $2,500 an ounce for the first time, bolstered by hopes the US Federal Reserve is edging closer to cutting interest rates. Spot bullion climbed as much as 2.2% Friday, exceeding the previous record set last month, as a disappointing reading on the US housing market reinforced expectations of fast and deeper cuts by the Fed. Lower rates generally are positive for gold as it pays no interest. The precious metal is up more than 20% this year amid mounting optimism on monetary easing and large purchases by central banks. It also has seen increased demand as a haven asset due to rising geopolitical risks, including tensions in the Middle East and Russia's war with Ukraine.

Russia says Ukraine planning Kursk nuclear plant 'provocation'
Russia accused Ukraine on Saturday of planning to attack a nuclear plant in the Kursk region that President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's troops have entered and blame such a «provocation» on Moscow, Interfax news agency said. Kyiv denied that as «insane» propaganda. Ukraine launched an incursion into Russia's western Kursk region on Aug. 6 to try and swing the dynamics of the two-and-a-half year war in its favour after Moscow's 2022 invasion.

Ukraine strengthens positions in Russia's Kursk region, Zelenskiy says
Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Saturday his troops had strengthened positions and expanded territory in Russia's Kursk region nearly two weeks into their incursion. Ukraine says it has seized more than 80 settlements over 1,150 square km (444 square miles) in Kursk since Aug. 6 in the biggest invasion of Russia since World War Two. Zelenskiy said his army chief Oleksander Syrskyi had reported that Ukrainian troops continued their advance and also took more Russian servicemen as prisoners.

Mint Quick Edit | Why did Ukraine invade Russia?
Russia, invaded over the past 10 days by Ukraine’s forces rolling into Kursk, last saw its borders violated this way only in World War II (by Nazi Germany). This flip in fortunes has stunned not just weary war watchers, who were wondering how long Kyiv could hold up against its bigger adversary, but perhaps Moscow too, given the latter’s sluggish response.

Ukraine opens military office in occupied Kursk region, says it is still advancing
Ukraine's top commander said on Thursday Kyiv had set up a military commandant's office in the occupied part of Russia's Kursk region where he said his forces were still advancing and had taken up to 1.5 km (0.93 miles) in the last 24 hours. Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi told President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in a video published by the Ukrainian leader that Kyiv's forces had advanced 35 km into Russia's Kursk region since launching an incursion last week. Kyiv's surge into Russian territory last week caught Moscow by surprise, seizing the initiative from Russian forces who have been grinding out small but steady gains all year in the east of the country.

UK economy grows 0.6% in Q2 2024
Britain's economy grew 0.6% in the second quarter of 2024, official figures showed on Thursday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast an expansion of 0.6%, building on a rapid 0.7% recovery in the first quarter of the year from a shallow recession in the second half of 2023. At the start of the month the Bank of England raised its annual growth forecast for 2024 to 1.25% from 0.5% due to a stronger-than-expected start to the year and an expectation of 0.7% quarter-on-quarter growth in the three months to June.

Ukraine's incursion into Russia flips the script on Putin
fleeing invading Ukrainian troops sought shelter from strangers. Russian parents feared that their children might be sent into battle for the first time. And in a televised crisis meeting Monday, President Vladimir Putin of Russia flipped through a white legal pad, reading aloud from handwritten notes, suggesting that his aides did not have the time to type up a speech for him as they usually do. Ukraine's surprise incursion into a sliver of Russia's Kursk region last week has not shifted the overall course of the war, but it has already struck a blow well beyond the few hundred square miles of Russia that Ukraine now controls: It has thrust a Russian government and society that had largely adapted to war into a new phase of improvisation and uncertainty.

Mirai, one of Toyota's top models, turned into a Hydrogen bomb by Ukrainian forces
Ukrainian Army used the battery fire or the hydrogen tank explosion technique to convert a civilian Toyota Mirai car into a hydrogen and plastic explosive that wreaked havoc. It was not a thermonuclear device or a hydrogen bomb, no fissile material was used. It was made using a fuel tank from a hydrogen car. However, the Ukrainian Army foiled the Russian efforts to take the town of Vovchansk and pushed them to a plant north of the river.

India issues advisory to nationals in three regions in Russia amid security concerns
Indian embassy here on Wednesday advised its citizens, including students, residing in Bryansk, Belgorod, and Kursk regions of Russia to relocate temporarily to safer places, citing recent «security incidents» in these areas following the intensification of the Russia-Ukraine war. The security advisory was issued hours after Russia's Belgorod border region declared an emergency under heavy shelling by Ukrainian forces that are pressing a major cross-border incursion into the adjacent Kursk region for a second week. An emergency was declared in Kursk last Saturday after Ukrainian forces on August 6 launched an incursion into the region, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, with both sides reporting casualties and territorial gains. «In view of the recent security incidents in Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk regions, Indian nationals are advised to take necessary precautions and temporarily relocate outside these regions,» the Indian embassy said.
