Elon Musk's X fails to block law to control toxic posts
Elon Musk's X lost its effort in court to block a California law that seeks to control toxic posts on social media by requiring companies to disclose their content-moderation polices. In an eight-page ruling Thursday, a federal judge in Sacramento rejected arguments by the company formerly known as Twitter that the measure violates the free-speech rights of social media platforms. The ruling comes after Musk ignited a firestorm in November by endorsing antisemitic posts on his platform.

Indian banks shrug off multiple headwinds
Indian banks have shrugged off exceptional monetary tightening in advanced economies, domestic rate hikes, wars and volatile commodity prices. Their notional losses in a major portfolio of securities are at a level to comfortably ward off the kind of threats that sank a few US banks in March 2023. «The notional loss in the HTM (held-to-maturity) book of scheduled commercial banks declined marginally to ₹70,497 crore as at end September 2023 as compared to a notional loss of ₹71,817 crore as at end March 2023,» the Reserve Bank of India said in its December 2023 Financial Stability Report. RBI's assessment of notional losses in the HTM portfolio — which it started publishing recently — assumes significance in light of the collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank and a few other US-based lenders in March 2023, stressed by huge losses incurred on holdings of American bonds. «If you look at the core capital of public sector banks, in our estimate, that is close to around ₹8 lakh crore.

Inside the US news industry's negotiations with OpenAI
OpenAI regarding the challenging matter of pricing and terms for licensing their content to the artificial intelligence company. The veil of secrecy surrounding these negotiations was lifted this week as The New York Times filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging copyright infringement. The claim asserted that both companies utilized Times' content without authorization in the development of artificial intelligence products. Prior to taking legal action, The New York Times had been in extended talks with these entities about a potential agreement. Other news organizations, including Gannett, the largest U.S. newspaper company; News Corp, owner of The Wall Street Journal; and IAC, the digital giant behind The Daily Beast and Dotdash Meredith, have also been in discussions with OpenAI, according to individuals familiar with the confidential negotiations.
