interest rates unchanged this week, but signaled different paths for policy going forward. Officials in the US are prepared to cut interest rates in 2024, while those in Europe said they’d step up their exit from pandemic-era stimulus. Meantime, policymakers in the UK were more hawkish, with several still supporting a rate hike at Thursday’s meeting. Here are some of the charts that appeared on Bloomberg this week on the latest developments in the global economy: US The Federal Reserve pivoted toward reversing the steepest interest-rate hikes in a generation after containing an inflation surge so far without a recession or a significant cost to employment.

Reviving tradition: Can dried fruit regain its sweet spot in modern palates?
Christmas in Mumbai is when you see nuns buying dried fruit at Crawford Market. Like many other Christmas cake bakers, they clearly believe that the best-dried fruit, in quality and value, is still found among the vendors here. Dried fruit is intrinsic to Christmas, whether in cake, pudding or mince pies, where ‘mince’ means chopped-up dried fruit.

FII flows, 11 IPOs, Accenture results among 8 factors likely to influence D-Street this week
Dalal Street, and market experts see them riding indices further higher in the near term. Last week’s rally was driven largely by foreign inflows, which will be essential for a sustained up-move in the market. After the 7% gains clocked in by Nifty 50 so far in December, technical charts, however, suggest that the market has entered into an overbought zone, and some cooling off to that extent is warranted. “From a technical standpoint, the Nifty is maintaining its bullish momentum, marked by a breakout from a flag formation. The immediate target stands at 21,700, with the possibility of further upward movement to 22,000, although some consolidation may follow,” said Santosh Meena, head of research, Swastika Investmart. On Friday, the Nifty 50 ended at a record closing high of 21,456.65 points with 1.3% gains. While the outlook for the secondary market remains positive, the action is likely to be more in the primary market as a plethora of IPOs are scheduled to hit the Street. Here are a few other factors that will drive the momentum for markets in the coming week.

AI to drive a new wave of IT spending and if ready, Indian companies could greatly benefit: Pankaj Murarka
Pankaj Murarka, CIO, Renaissance Investment Managers, says “the AI wave will be a much longer term wave like we saw in the mid-90s or early 90s till the end of the decade, the dotcom boom. As a result, IT companies in India across largecaps and midcaps, if they execute well, if they have solutions around it and if they build capabilities around AI, will see a huge amount of work flowing to them. This whole wave of elevated IT spends or resurgence in IT spends globally will sustain for this decade. That is my view and that is why I think this is not one of those cyclical rallies in IT, but this is probably a change of trend.” It has been such a great week. Shouldn’t you be more enthusiastic? We are nearing the end of the year. It has been a phenomenal year for equities globally and for India as well and now that we are ending on a very high note with the last of the sector which had not participated in this b,ull market for almost 24 months now has also started participating. So, it is time to just calm down and absorb all that we have gained and experienced.

This is India's moment to arrive on the global stage: Vineet Jain
India's moment to respond and arrive on the global stage, Times Group MD Vineet Jain said in Mysuru on Saturday, pointing to the country's outstanding macroeconomic, demographic, and social indicators. The country is now poised to take the next big jump and take a leading role in driving big ideas in three major areas -innovation in technology and entrepreneurship, education and skill development, and sustainability and environmental stewardship, he said. Jain was delivering the valedictory address at the fourth international conclave on Globalising Indian Thought, Indian Knowledge System, Culture, and Management. Professor Debashis Chatterjee, director of the Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode, chaired the valedictory event. «India's greatest strength is our human resource,» Jain said, as he delved into the «Idea of globalising Indian talent» in his address. He said India's current workforce is estimated at 495 million, which is expected to grow to 1.1 billion by 2050, implying that the country will make up 40% of the global workforce by then. «With a million young Indians joining the workforce every month, India will be the only country on the planet with a surplus of talent,» he said, underlining the opportunity to the Indians who have already been visible and transformative at the world's most celebrated institutions. He quoted US envoy to India Eric Garcetti's statement that more than 10% of Fortune 500 companies' CEOs are Indians or of Indian origin. Some of the most iconic global companies such as Microsoft, Alphabet, Starbucks, Adobe, IBM, Novartis, Barclays, Bata and Deloitte, among others, are headed by persons born, educated and trained in India, Jain said.
