Aviat Airlines Southern President country travelers El Salvador slaps $1,130 fee on Indian travelers amid US pressure to curb migration
El Salvador has introduced a $1,130 fee on travelers from 57 countries, including India, passing through its main airport. This measure, enforced since the end of October, has drawn attention due to its timing amid increasing pressure from the United States to manage migration flows heading towards its southern border. El Salvador's aviation authority has labeled the fee as an «airport improvement fee,» but the motive behind it remains unclear. Notably, the US has been urging Central American nations to take steps to control the flow of migrants reaching its border with Mexico. While El Salvador has not explicitly linked the fee to migration control, the country has acknowledged a rise in travelers from the specified nations this year. Most affected passengers are destined for Nicaragua, primarily on Avianca, a commercial airline. Nicaragua, with its lenient visa requirements, serves as a transit point for migrants from Haiti, Cuba, and Africa, aiming to reach the US. Earlier this year, an unexpected increase in migrants from Mauritania arriving at the US southern border puzzled officials. Investigations revealed travel agencies and social media influencers promoting routes through Morocco, Spain, and El Salvador before reaching Nicaragua. El Salvador's aviation authority and immigration agency lack specific data on the number of migrants from the listed countries transiting the country in 2023. The US embassy has not confirmed if it played a role in requesting the fee.

FIVE Waters economy Bill President innovations testing US bets on small nuclear reactors to help fix a huge climate problem
Georgia, the first nuclear reactors built from scratch in the United States in more than 30 years illustrate the enormous promise of nuclear power — and its most glaring weakness. The two new reactors at the Vogtle nuclear power plant will join two older units to create enough electricity to power 2 million homes, 24 hours a day, without emitting any of the carbon dioxide that is dangerously heating the planet. But those colossal reactors cost $35 billion, more than double the original estimates, and arrived seven years behind schedule. That's why no one else is planning to build large reactors in the United States. Instead, the great hope for the future of nuclear power is to go small. Nearly a dozen companies are developing reactors that are a fraction of the size of those at Vogtle, betting that they will be quicker and cheaper to build.

Provident Waves CEO Enterprise BURST Marvell Department Startups with laser beams: The companies trying to ignite fusion energy
A small group of startups have embarked on this quest, pursuing their own variations on this theme — different lasers, different techniques to set off the fusion reactions, different elements to fuse together. «There has been rapid growth,» said Andrew Holland, CEO of the Fusion Industry Association, a trade group lobbying for policies to speed the development of fusion. Private enterprise promises quick innovation, but it was a breakthrough achieved by a big, costly and ponderous government-run project that spurred this wave of attention to laser fusion. Last December, after years of trying, the National Ignition Facility, or NIF, at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory reported that it had finally lived up to its middle name: ignition. For the first time anywhere, a laser-induced burst of fusion produced more energy than that supplied by the incoming lasers. «We're really excited by the NIF results,» said Kramer Akli, who manages the internal fusion energy sciences program at the U.S.

Art Man Manufacturing Racing show gatherings 1962 Ferrari auctioned for $51.7 mn in New York: Sotheby's
1962 Ferrari 250 GTO sports car sold for $51.7 million in New York on Monday, making it the second most expensive car ever sold at auction, Sotheby's said. The bright red roadster had been the property of an American collector for the past 38 years, and its auction price was surpassed only by that of a Mercedes 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe that went for 135 million euros in 2022, the auction house said. That would be $144 million at today's exchange rate. The 250 GTO went on sale Monday evening after a few minutes of bidding in the auction room, but at a price lower than the more than $60 million expected by RM Sotheby's, the luxury car subsidiary of the auction house. Sotheby's did not identify the winning bidder. Dating from 1962, this legendary Scuderia sports car — chassis 3765, four-liter engine developing 390 horsepower — had finished second in a 1,000 km endurance race on the German Nurburgring circuit, as well as in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans, where the team had to withdraw due to engine failure, according to RM Sotheby's. After several years of competition on the Italian mainland and in Sicily, the car was sold and exported to the US in the late 1960s. Restored and modified, the 250 GTO changed American owners several times before ending up in the hands of an Ohio «dedicated collector» in 1985, who sold it on Monday. «This stunning GTO offers its next caretaker further touring and vintage racing enjoyment, or display at major concours d'elegance and marque gatherings worldwide,» Sotheby's said. The Mercedes 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe that fetched 135 million euros in 2022 was one of only two examples of the sport car.

film Celebrity blues pop musician gatherings Pop icon Prince's 'Purple Rain' shirt may fetch Rs 12 lk in US auction
The collection, including more than 200 lots up for sale, was assembled by a French collector who initially hoped to open a museum celebrating the musician but later scrapped the plan, according to RR Auction of Boston, which is overseeing the sale. The collector had reached out to individuals who worked closely with Prince to gather the items, believing that the trendsetting artist, who died in 2016, was not only a musical virtuoso but also a fashion icon, according to the auction house. One of the highlights of the auction is a white ruffled shirt worn by Prince during his 1985 American Music Awards performance of the song 'Purple Rain.' The auction house estimated its value at $15,000. The auction traces Prince's evolution in music and fashion from his 'Purple Rain' era through to his death, according to Bobby Livingston of RR Auction. «What this auction really does is it shows the influence and legacy of Prince with his fashion choices and how it relates today, when you see all these artists on tour, you know, different costumes, different outfits, reinventing themselves for each tour,» he said. Also up for auction is the outfit Prince wore from 'Under the Cherry Moon,' a 1986 film starring Prince that also marked his debut as a director.
