Charting the global economy: China’s economy gains momentum
China exceeded forecast, helped by stronger retail sales at the end of the third quarter and bolstered by government stimulus efforts. Household demand was also robust in the US and likely contributed to the strongest pace of economic growth in nearly two years. Meanwhile, persistent industrial woes are projected to leave the German economy — Europe’s largest — in another recession this year. Here are some of the charts that appeared on Bloomberg this week on the latest developments in the global economy: Asia China’s economy gained momentum last quarter as people ramped up spending on everything from restaurants and alcohol to cars, offsetting a drag from the property crisis and putting Beijing’s annual growth goal well within reach. China’s economy gained momentum last quarter as people ramped up spending on everything from restaurants and alcohol to cars, offsetting a drag from the property crisis and putting Beijing’s annual growth goal well within reach. China’s central bank stepped up efforts to support the nation’s economic recovery and debt sales by delivering the largest cash injection since 2020 with one-year policy loans. The injection of extra cash into the economy will offer a much-needed boost to China’s growth, which has been challenged by a lack of demand and a downturn in the property market this year. South Korea’s trade minister said his country is prepared to look for alternative sources of graphite if China’s newly strengthened export controls on the key material used in electric-vehicle batteries cause a severe shortage.

Where is HDFC Bank headed? Time to look elsewhere? Mahantesh Sabarad answers
Mahantesh Sabarad, Independent Market Expert, says “from a forward looking perspective, most of the banks should be looking at a significant premium over the ROE in terms of multiples that we offer to the book value. IndusInd Bank is one such bank which is doing incrementally better while HDFC Bank is not.” This market is getting rusty, technicals are getting sticky and global cues are not looking all that solid and strong. Do you think the best part of the market for the next couple of weeks and months is actually behind us? Yes, I think so because we have seen a lot of volatility in the market; markets have been rising up, going down, partly due to a lot of geopolitical tensions coming in due to results flowing in and a little bit on uncertainty related to the US Fed policy as well. So, all these events compressed together have come about in the past four to six odd weeks and have caused huge volatility in the market. With the net market trend lowering, I guess the future ahead seems to suggest that we can look for better market days ahead.

The coming truncated week is likely to bring in volatility as a plethora of companies are scheduled to release earnings and the October derivatives expiry is due. “Markets are likely to remain sideways to volatile in the coming week, and Nifty 50 may trade within a wider range of 19300-19850,” said Arvinder Singh Nanda, senior vice president, Master Capital Services. A breakout in either direction within this range has the potential to trigger a significant move, possibly spanning 200 to 400 points in one direction, Nanda said. On Friday, the Nifty 50 ended at 19542.65 points, down 82.05 points or 0.4%. The stock market will be closed on Tuesday for Dussehra.

Stock pickers sidelined with world events overshadowing earnings
Earnings season typically is the time when investors can look past macroeconomic forces and focus on company-specific news moving stocks. This quarter, however, is turning out to be anything but typical. Individual shares have, of course, reacted to earnings announcements in the week or so since Corporate America started reporting results. But conflict in the Middle East and surging Treasury yields are taking precedence, causing S&P 500 Index constituents to increasingly move in unison as global events sway markets broadly. In four of the six trading sessions since the reporting cycle kicked off on Oct. 13, at least 400 members in the S&P 500 have moved in the same direction. It’s a frequency that didn’t appear once in comparable weeks the past three earnings periods. Such concerted moves — up and down — are further complicating the lives of stock pickers in a year when they’ve had little luck, with only 37% of large-cap active managers outperforming their benchmarks as of the end of September, data compiled by Bank of America Corp. show. “Macro is dominating the narrative again,” Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist at LPL Financial, said by phone. “The situation in the Middle East obviously weighs on sentiment.”

The draft text, seen by Reuters, calls for the protection of civilians — including those who are trying to get to safety — notes that states must comply with international law when responding to «terrorist attacks», and urges the «continuous, sufficient and unhindered» delivery of aid to the Gaza Strip. It was not immediately clear if or when the United States planned to put the draft resolution to a vote. To pass, a resolution needs at least nine votes in favor and no vetoes by Russia, China, the United States, France or Britain.
