US retail traders eye a fresh piece of the crypto derivatives pie
bitcoin buffs have a shiny new derivatives playground that cryptocurrency analysts hope will fire up a moribund market. Their new platform is cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase Global, which on Aug. 16 became the first crypto-focused firm to win approval to offer cryptocurrency futures to U.S. retail customers. It's early days. But crypto markets are excited by the possibility that the first regulated and listed crypto firm to offer futures trading to U.S. retail investors might revive a shrinking $2 trillion cryptocurrency derivatives market. «Coinbase's approval to offer U.S. futures has the potential to rekindle hope and momentum in the market,» said Lucas Kiely, chief investment officer of digital investment platform Yield App.

India's generic drug prescription mandate faces execution challenges, says Fitch
generic drug names faces execution challenges, said Fitch Ratings in a report on Thursday. The report said that a sizeable erosion in branded generics sales share will affect Indian pharma companies’ profitability, as sharply lower average prices will outweigh potential benefits from lower marketing costs. «Even so, we think the new guidelines are unlikely to trigger an immediate shift away from branded generics,» it said. According to Fitch, the domestic pharmaceutical market is mainly a ‘branded generics’ market in which pharma companies sell off-patented drugs under their own brand names with varying prices among competitors. «Branding and marketing activities remain important in pharma companies’ sales strategy, considering less stringent quality and testing standards than other regulated markets such as the US.

Alternate financing to capitalise on $500B SME credit opportunity in India: Redseer-GetVantage Report
SME Credit Report 2023 released today in collaboration between GetVantage and Redseer Strategy Consultants estimates that a potential US$ 220 Bn credit deficit poses a roadblock to unlocking the economic potential of millions of digitised businesses. Out of the current US$ 220 Bn requirement (as of FY22), Redseer analysts estimate US$ 165 Bn as serviceable when adjusted for sick and commercially unviable businesses. Even after an infusion of US$ 53 Bn in FY22 into the market through various channels, the current working capital deficit stands at US$ 112 Bn.

Fukushima: Why is Japan releasing water and is it safe?
Japan began pumping more than a million metric tons of treated radioactive water from the destroyed Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on Thursday, a process that will take decades to complete. The water was distilled after being contaminated from contact with fuel rods at the reactor, destroyed in a 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Tanks on the site hold about 1.3 million tonnes of the water — enough to fill 500 Olympic-sized swimming pools.WHAT IS JAPAN'S WATER RELEASE PLAN? The utility responsible for the plant, Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco), has been filtering the contaminated water to remove isotopes, leaving only tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen that is hard to separate. Tepco will dilute the water until tritium levels fall below regulatory limits before pumping it into the sea from the site on the coast north of Tokyo. Water containing tritium is routinely released from nuclear plants around the world, and regulatory authorities support dealing with the Fukushima water in this way. Tritium is considered to be relatively harmless because its radiation is not energetic enough to penetrate human skin.
