If elected, will Kamala Harris be the most foul-mouthed president in US history?
Kamala Harris will become the most obnoxious US president in history. It doesn't seem like the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies Legislative Summit is the right place for the woman who aspires to be the next head of state to use profanity. However, that is precisely what transpired in May when US Vice President Kamala Harris spoke to a group of young Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. A few weeks before Joe Biden declared he would not run for reelection, Harris stated that you have to know that sometimes people will open the door for you and leave it open. Sometimes they won't, in which case you have to kick down that door, followed by a cuss word. Her audience at that point in time clapped and laughed, whereas a few decades ago they might have gasped or taken in the expletive silently. Harris later apologized for her language. However, it wasn't the first time the Democratic presidential candidate had used a four-letter word in public, and it won't be the last. SC halts CoC meetings at Byju’s; tells resolution professional to maintain status quo
Supreme Court on Thursday temporarily halted all meetings related to the insolvency proceedings of debt-laden edtech firm Byju's, asking the interim resolution professional (IRP) Pankaj Srivastava to maintain status quo for the time being and not to hold any meeting of the lenders. “Until the judgment is pronounced, the interim resolution professional shall maintain status quo and shall not hold any meeting of the committee of creditors,” a Bench led by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud directed. The apex court reserved its verdict on an appeal by US lender GLAS Trust Co LLC, the trustee for lenders owed $1.2 billion by Byju’s, against the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal's (NCLAT) order approving a settlement deal between the Think & Learn Pvt Ltd, the parent of online educational services company, and its operational creditor, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The lender had alleged that the money paid by Byju Raveendran’s brother Riju Ravindran was tainted.

Pakistan signs contract to sell JF-17 fighter jets to Azerbaijan
Pakistan's military said on Thursday that the country has signed a contract to sell JF-17 Block III fighter jets to Azerbaijan. The aircraft is co-produced by the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex and developed jointly with China, with whom Islamabad has grown increasingly close as ties with traditional military ally the United States have weakened over the last few years. The military did not provide the cost or quantity of jets agreed to, but said in a statement that the sale was part of Islamabad's efforts to enhance defence cooperation with friendly countries and bolster the air power capabilities of Azerbaijan.

Accenture Q4 profit up 22%, GenAI bookings at $1 billion
technology services player Accenture on Thursday reported a 22.6% year-on-year (YoY) rise in net profit at $1.68 billion for the fourth quarter ending August 2024. This compares with $1.37 billion profit in June-August quarter 2023. The profit grew on the back of healthy growth in North America and health & public services segment aided by robust new bookings, especially generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) deals. The Nasdaq-listed IT major hiked its annual revenue growth forecast to 3-6% for 2025, including 2-3% from mergers and acquisitions (M&A). This is on the back of improvement in the macroeconomic environment and the US Federal Reserve’s recent interest rate cut of 0.5%. Accenture follows a September-August financial year. The Accenture forecast is an important indicator of the performance of key Indian IT companies as they start reporting their quarter earnings starting from Tata Consultancy Services in early October.

US and allies call for an immediate 21-day cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah
France and other allies jointly called Wednesday for an immediate 21-day cease-fire to allow for negotiations in the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah that has killed more than 600 people in Lebanon in recent days. The joint statement, negotiated on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York, says the recent fighting is «intolerable and presents an unacceptable risk of a broader regional escalation.» «We call for an immediate 21-day cease-fire across the Lebanon-Israel border to provide space for diplomacy,» the statement said. «We call on all parties, including the governments of Israel and Lebanon, to endorse the temporary cease-fire immediately.»

One in two El Nino events could be extreme by 2050, study finds
El Nino events could be extreme by 2050 if current trends in greenhouse gas emissions continue, a new study has found. El Nino, a weather pattern known for triggering warmer extremes like heatwaves and floods, is known to raise sea surface temperatures, while its counterpart La Nina leads to cooling effects. Both are phases of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) climate driver. Multiple studies have provided evidence that a consistently warming climate favours more frequent and intense El Nino events, which are known to fuel extreme weather events. In this study, conducted by researchers including those from the University of Colorado Boulder, US, used computer models to stimulate El Nino events over the past 21,000 years — the peak of Earth's last Ice Age, one of the planet's coldest periods.
