Reuters economy Hyundai President Pride country Trump auto tariffs take aim at a pillar of Asian economies - and national pride
Shares in companies such as Japan's Toyota and Honda and South Korea's Hyundai Motor and Kia Corp fell, wiping off some $16.5 billion in value, after Trump on Wednesday unveiled a 25% tariff on imported cars and light trucks to take effect on April 3. On the streets of Tokyo and Seoul, and in «motor city» Gwangju, people were concerned the levies would have a far-reaching impact, speaking to the singular role the car industry has played in the post-war economic rise of the two U.S. allies. While car production helped transform Germany, Italy and France after World War Two, its influence in Asia has been even more profound. Automakers form the nucleus of vast networks of group companies that impact almost every facet of working life in the two countries. In Japan, where the industry accounts for roughly 3% of gross domestic product, it is the automakers — particularly Toyota — that set the precedent for national wage increases through annual talks between unions and management.

UPS FIVE Manufacturing pandemic reports Will HAL finally gain speed after getting GE engines for Tejas following multi-year delay?
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is gearing up to ramp up production of the Tejas Mark-1A, India's indigenously developed fighter jet, after years of delays worsened by issues with engine supplies from the United States, according to a TOI report on Thursday. The first of the 99 engine shipments arrived on March 26, 2025, after General Electric's (GE) aerospace division overcame significant challenges, including reactivating the F404 production line, which had been dormant for five years. This marks a major milestone, but HAL still faces numerous challenges in meeting the ambitious delivery timelines for the fighter aircraft, which is crucial for India’s military preparedness. In response to the ongoing delays, HAL has intensified its efforts to scale up production, with three production lines in operation, said the TOI report. The company’s facilities in Bengaluru and Nashik are expected to play a crucial role in increasing production capacity. According to the report, HAL is confident that it can scale up to a rate of 20 Tejas per year, with plans to further boost production to 24 units annually.

Digital CEO Platform security Sustainability War Interviews Kotak CEO reveals a lot on RBI cuts, deposit wars and banking’s next big moves
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is expected to announce another rate cut in April, and its impact on bank fixed deposit (FD) rates remains a key question. Ashok Vaswani, Managing Director and CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank, in a interview to ToI said he believes that while the previous 25-basis-point cut has not yet led to lower deposit rates, a total reduction of 50-75 basis points could start influencing term deposit pricing. He expects significant movement in the banking sector over the next 6-12 months. Deposits remain a critical focus for banks, with last year witnessing a competitive battle for attracting funds. Vaswani acknowledges that securing deposits is not just about volume but also pricing. To sustain growth, Kotak Mahindra Bank is leaning on product innovation, customer-centric offerings, and its digital platform, 811. However, liquidity constraints persist, making it too soon to determine whether conditions will improve. The bank continues to monitor macroeconomic trends closely. Reuters students Universities Department Discrimination Colleges Investigations Trump warns these universities over antisemitic discrimination against Jewish students. Check details
Muhlenberg College learned in January 2024 — as pro-Palestinian protests were sweeping campuses across the United States — that it was under investigation for discriminating against Jewish students, the small liberal arts institution in Pennsylvania took action. The college fired a tenured professor who had been accused of targeting Jewish students, and the U.S. Education Department, satisfied with Muhlenberg's response to complaints of antisemitism on campus, ended its investigation. So Muhlenberg's inclusion on a list of 60 universities and colleges under investigation by the Education Department for antisemitism was «not anticipated,» Todd Lineburger, a spokesperson for Muhlenberg, said. «To our knowledge, Muhlenberg is not on the DOE list of institutions with open investigations,» Lineburger said. «We have received no further information from the Department of Education and continue our robust efforts to remain fully compliant with all laws and regulations.» The March 10 letter to 60 institutions, signed by the Education Department's acting civil rights chief Craig Trainor, focused on antisemitic activity following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel. It warned that Donald Trump's administration would not tolerate antisemitic acts — and institutions that did risked losing federal government funding.

UPS Booking CEO Airlines show travelers Interviews Economic turbulence shakes US airlines as travel demand falters
«Your first needs are food and shelter. And then, we're a little bit down the list of expenditures,» said David Neeleman, CEO of low-cost carrier Breeze Airways, in an interview. «If you don't have a job, you're not going to go buy an airline ticket.» With demand slowing, airlines have started culling flights to avoid lowering fares and to protect margins. Frontier, Delta, United, American Airlines, JetBlue and Allegiant all trimmed their April-June quarter capacity in the past two weeks. United CEO Scott Kirby has warned of a large drop in industry-wide capacity by the second half of August if demand does not rebound. To be sure, bookings for premium and long-haul travel are holding up. United reported an 8% year-on-year jump in spring international bookings. Some of the demand slowdown is also due to recent safety incidents. Amanda Demanda Law Group data shows airplane safety concerns reached an all-time high in February, with Google searches for «Are planes safe now?» up 900%. Airlines expect the hit from safety incidents to fade soon. But they are less sure about economic pressures.

markets UPS Manufacturing Tesla country reports International Is Tesla-killer BYD chasing Elon Musk to India?
Tesla struggles with falling sales and share price and global protests against his brand for his support to US President Donald Trump, its CEO Elon Musk looks at India with hope. Long seen as a potential disruptor for India's EV, Tesla is finally entering India, opening a showroom in Mumbai to sell its imported cars and has plans to set up a manufacturing plant in Maharashtra. However, Tesla has lost years dilly-dallying on its India entry and meanwhile Indian EV makers have grown enough to make things difficult for it. Many think the company may not after all be able to disrupt the Indian market in any significant way nor reap any huge dividends. Tesla may face another big challenge in India. Its global rival BYD (Build Your Dreams), which sells cars imported from China in India, could be planning to manufacture in the country. According to unconfirmed media reports, the Chinese EV giant is planning to set up a factory in Telangana. BYD, together with Indian EV makers such as Mahindra and Tata; the JV between India's JSW and China's MG Motor; and Korean and Japanese automakers CAN make it difficult for Tesla to benefit from the Indian market in any substantial way.

UPS economy Trade Commentary International orienteering Rate cut on the horizon? Vishrut Rana on what could be RBI’s next move
«This is pulling back investment and it is likely to have slightly inflationary impacts in the US in particular, which means slightly more elevated interest rates and this is going to impact Asia-Pacific through tighter monetary policy,» says Vishrut Rana, S&P Global Ratings. Let me first up ask you about the tariffs, the impact that this is going to have globally. We have been getting a lot of commentary. At one point in time you think that Trump is going to go all out, all aggressive. This morning you got comments where he said April 2nd is when he will put the reciprocal tariffs, but they will be lenient. How should one read into all of these developments and react to that? Vishrut Rana: Indeed in these highly uncertain times a lot to watch out for. So, the impact of tariffs on the global economy is going to be significant. We think that it is already having an impact in terms of delaying investment plans for firms across the region until there is more clarity in terms of where the trade tensions are going to materialise.

UPS security Trade country testing rights China President Xi tests US allies in Indo-Pacific as Trump is busy elsewhere
Xi Jinping is making China’s presence more felt across the Indo-Pacific region by testing US allies on sensitive issues, as Donald Trump’s attention is taken up elsewhere. From sending warships off Australia’s coast for unprecedented shooting drills to flying a record number of “grey zone” balloons around Taiwan, and putting pressure on Thailand over human rights issues, Beijing is ramping up efforts to project power in the region. China also issued a strongly worded warning on Taiwan to Tokyo — which doesn’t officially recognize Taipei — against “colluding” with separatists. Trump’s sudden embrace of Russia, skepticism of NATO allies and tariffs that punish friendly nations have fueled concerns about the US as a reliable security partner in Asia, where Washington has for decades provided a buffer to Beijing.
