The report mentions that the incident took place close to the Second Thomas Shoal, which is referred to as Ayungin Shoal by Manila. The area is a submerged reef where a small number of its troops reside on an old US ship from World War Two that was deliberately grounded in 1999.

F1 visa slots open up in India, making American dream come true for some
F1 visa is opening up at various consulates in India, giving hope to students who want to pursue their Masters in United States. Some of these students have faced rejections in the past and hope that they will be able to finally get their hands on the visa. «I have deferred my admission twice since last year as my visa got rejected a couple of times. In my desperation, I even went to Vietnam for a visa interview, but even there my visa was rejected,» said Rakesh P, who is now set to travel to New York on August 14 to TOI. He attended a visa interview in New Delhi recently and has been approved to study in the US, on his third attempt. Another candidate, Vijay M, said: «I have been appearing for interviews since June last year. I deferred my admission five times. Finally, my visa has been approved now and I will be travelling next week.» Vijay too appeared for his last interview from Chennai. US student visas grew by the largest annual margin seen in over a decade, in line to becoming the highest single-year total of F-1 visas since 2016.

How much time do you need for an international layover?
international flights. But do you need that much time for connections between international flights? Layovers of just 30 minutes can be feasible for domestic flights, especially at small airports where the next flight might be just one gate over. But international layovers are typically far more complicated, and even two hours can be insufficient. Here’s how to book flights with an international layover, and how much time you really need.WAYS TO BOOK A FLIGHT WITH AN INTERNATIONAL LAYOVER Let’s say you’re flying from Houston to Hanoi, Vietnam. There might be no direct flights between those two cities, but you could get there via layover. The most common, least risky way to book international flights necessitating a layover is by searching for flights between your departure and arrival cities. Even with no nonstops available, the airline automatically determines your layover and puts both flights on one reservation. This strategy is ideal for a few reasons:

Leave No Pet Behind: Returning U.S. Soldiers, Diplomats Work to Bring Home Furry Friends
When U.S. ambassador to Sudan John Godfrey was huddled in Khartoum while dodging bullets and airstrikes, there was one question that he hadn’t expected: How much did the embassy staff’s cats and dogs weigh? Navy SEALs, who were dispatched to save diplomatic personnel from the clashes that had erupted between feuding Sudanese generals, had agreed to evacuate pets as part of their diplomatic rescue mission. The only stipulations were that the four-legged passengers fit in carry-on bags and that their weight was counted down to the pound.

India’s rice export curbs could prove too myopic for its good
Global food markets have been thrown into some chaos yet again —not only because of Russia’s decision to pull out of the Black Sea grain deal, but also India’s announcement that it would ban the export of many varieties of rice. The partial exit of the rice market’s largest trading nation, with about a 40% share of exports, has led to fears that food inflation will race out of control, particularly in countries of the Global South that are already struggling with very high debt levels and inflated food and fuel bills.

Elusive quest for semiconductor self-sufficiency
Semiconductors are the life blood of modern electronics, and their demand is increasing exponentially. India, a large consumer of electronics, is importing almost all its semiconductor needs to the tune of $24 billion a year (demand is expected to touch $110 billion by 2030). Massive supply disruption during the pandemic and emergence of virulent geopolitical tensions across the world, is forcing nations to seek self-reliance for accessing this precious commodity.
