Amnesia over America’s banking crisis of 2023 may prove perilous
Almost a year after the mini banking crisis in the US, it is worth revisiting the episode. Was it just a tempest in a teacup? Was there really a systemic threat, or was it just a problem with a few banks? Should the interventions by the US Federal Reserve and Treasury worry or comfort us? Recall that three mid-size US banks suddenly failed around March 2023. The most prominent was Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), which became the second-largest bank failure in US history (after Washington Mutual in 2008).

‘One-size-fits-all’ approach not fit for deepfakes: BSA to MeitY
software industry group which counts enterprise firms like Microsoft as its clients said in its representation to the ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY). Washington DC-headquartered software industry group BSA The Software Alliance said that business-to-business and enterprise software services may not pose the same risk to user safety and public order and that the government should consider content authenticity solutions. Public policy solutions to address the issue of deep fakes remain unclear and continue to elude policymakers, said BSA in a letter to the ministry of electronics and IT earlier this month. The government plans to amend the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 to include regulations for deep fakes.

The real message of Vladimir Putin’s chat with Tucker Carlson
congressional Republicans have held up further support for Kyiv, mindful of the presidential election this November and Donald Trump’s candidacy in it. A Trumpist provocateur and host on Fox News until he was sacked last year, Mr Carlson gave Mr Putin lots of chances to stir up American politics. For a supposed sorcerer of electoral interference, the president did a poor job.

Israel PM orders army to prepare to evacuate civilians from Gaza's Rafah
Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the army to prepare to «evacuate» hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from Gaza's Rafah, his office said Friday, after Washington warned it would not support any ground assault on the city. The show of defiance against Israel's main ally came after President Joe Biden issued his strongest criticism yet of Netanyahu's conduct of the war, warning the response to Hamas's October 7 attack had been «over the top». Netanyahu told military and security officials to «submit to the cabinet a combined plan for evacuating the population and destroying the battalions» of Palestinian militant group Hamas holed up in Rafah, a statement from his office said.
