markets Target CEO Diversity inclusion reports rights Diversity pullback: Tech giants lead US companies in pulling back on initiatives
equity and inclusion initiatives that much of corporate America endorsed following the protests that accompanied the Minneapolis police killing of George Floyd, a Black man, in 2020. The changes have come in response to a campaign by conservative activists to target workplace programs in the courts and social media, and more recently, President Donald Trump's executive orders aimed at upending DEI policies in both the federal government and private sector. DEI policies typically are intended to root out systemic barriers to the advancement of historically marginalized groups in certain fields or roles. Critics argue that some education, government and business programs are discriminatory because they single out participants based on factors such as race, gender and sexual orientation. They have targeted corporate sponsorships, employee-led affinity groups, programs aimed at steering contracts to minority or women-owned businesses, and goals that some companies established for increasing minority representation in leadership ranks.

Among Donald Trump’s first acts as US President was to put all government staff working on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) on administrative leave before shutting down federal programmes. Even before Trump put his pen to this executive order, deeming DEI “dangerous, demeaning and immoral," a bunch of CXOs had declared their disdain, terming it “racist", “anti-American" and “illegal." With brave exceptions, America Inc seems to have turned against DEI in an instant, as if earlier efforts to address the under-representation of gender, ethnic and other identities were a farce.

ambush shooting death of a Minneapolis police officer has stunned a department that has struggled to fill its ranks since the murder of George Floyd and the ensuing turmoil. Officer Jamal Mitchell's death Thursday came days after the fourth anniversary of Floyd's killing by a city officer, which sparked sometimes violent unrest across the country and forced a reckoning with police brutality and racism. Minneapolis became ground zero for the “defund the police" movement, and while that didn’t succeed in eliminating the city's police department, the force remains well below full strength.

Target Death Bill 2020 Inmate stabbed Derek Chauvin 22 times, charged with attempted murder, prosecutors say
prison stabbing of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd. John Turscak stabbed Chauvin 22 times in the law library at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona, with an improvised knife, federal prosecutors said. Turscak, 52, told correctional officers he would've killed Chauvin had they not responded so quickly, prosecutors said. Turscak later told FBI agents that he'd been thinking about assaulting Chauvin for about a month because he is a high-profile inmate but denied wanting to kill him, prosecutors said. Turscak told the agents that he attacked Chauvin on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, as a symbolic connection to the Black Lives Matter movement and the «Black Hand» symbol associated with the Mexican Mafia gang, prosecutors said. An attorney for Turscak was not listed in court records and Turscak, who has represented himself in numerous court matters from prison, remained in custody on Friday. Chauvin, 47, was sent to FCI Tucson from a maximum-security Minnesota state prison in August 2022 to simultaneously serve a 21-year federal sentence for violating Floyd's civil rights and a 22½-year state sentence for second-degree murder. Chauvin's lawyer, Eric Nelson, had advocated for keeping him out of general population and away from other inmates, anticipating he'd be a target.
