markets Target Digital President Experts War country Fall of Assad regime 'historic opportunity for people' of Syria: US President Joe Biden
Assad regime that brutalised, tortured and killed thousands of innocent Syrians over the past half a century is a historic opportunity for the people of the country, outgoing US President Joe Biden said on Sunday. Biden spoke at the White House hours after rebel groups took over the country following more than a dozen years of violent civil war and decades of leadership by Bashar Assad and his family. «After 13 years of civil war in Syria and more than half a century of brutal authoritarian rule by Bashar Assad and his father before him, rebel forces have forced Assad to resign his office and flee the country. We're not sure where he is, but there's word that he's in Moscow. At long last, the Assad regime has fallen,» Biden said. «This regime brutalised, tortured and killed hundreds of thousands of innocent Syrians. The fall of the regime is a fundamental act of justice. It's a moment of historic opportunity for the long-suffering people of Syria to build a better future for their proud country,» he said.

markets Citi Fighting Software War country Not our fight: Trump says US should stay out of fighting in Syria as opposition forces gain ground
Donald Trump said on Saturday that the US military should stay out of the escalating conflict in Syria as a shock opposition offensive closes in on the capital, declaring in a social media post, «THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT.» With world leaders watching the rapid rebel advance against Syria's Russian-and Iranian-backed president, Bashar Assad, President Joe Biden's national security adviser separately stressed that the Biden administration had no intention of intervening. «The United States is not going to… militarily dive into the middle of a Syrian civil war,» Jake Sullivan told an audience in California. He said the US would keep acting as necessary to keep the Islamic State — a violently anti-Western extremist group not known to be involved in the offensive but with sleeper cells in Syria's deserts — from exploiting openings presented by the fighting.

UPS Strategy Software ByteDance TikTok President Courts Why TikTok faces a US ban, and what's next?
TikTok, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance, have prompted the U.S. government to pass legislation banning the social media platform unless it is sold to a government-approved buyer. President Joe Biden signed into law legislation that gives ByteDance up to a year to divest from TikTok. The company lost its first legal effort to overturn the law on Friday, when a panel of three federal judges unanimously rejected TikTok's argument that the law violated the First Amendment. The company pledged to appeal the decision to the Supreme Court. TikTok, which boasts 170 million users in the United States, could be banned as soon as mid-January, unless it receives a court-ordered injunction that would pause the law from taking effect as the appeal proceeds. There is also a chance that President-elect Donald Trump will try to rescue the app.

Platform ByteDance TikTok Instagram Meta Platforms social Courts TikTok's loss, Facebook, Instagram's gain! Check how Meta is soaring
Facebook, Instagram-owner Meta Platforms hit a record high on Friday after a U.S. appeals court upheld a law requiring China-based ByteDance to divest its popular short video app TikTok by early next year or face a ban. The decision is a devastating blow to ByteDance, whose social media app is used by 170 million Americans. It affirmed a law, which was passed by Congress with bipartisan support and signed by President Joe Biden, that gives the U.S. government sweeping powers to ban other foreign-owned apps that could raise concerns about collection of Americans' data. TikTok and ByteDance had argued that the law is unconstitutional and violates Americans' free speech rights.

recently issued a «full and unconditional» pardon to his son Hunter Biden for gun crime and tax convictions, a decision that was widely criticised by Republicans and Democrats alike. Biden, who earlier said he would not interfere with the proceedings, said his son was “unfairly prosecuted" by political opponents. This has brought renewed attention to the US Constitution's provision granting the president the authority to offer clemency, a power wielded by every president since George Washington. Biden's senior aides in the White House are now actively considering whether to issue 'preemptive pardons' to certain current and former public officials in the government as fears grow over the possibility of politically motivated prosecutions under Donald Trump’s return to the presidency.

After vowing for years he wouldn't interfere with the judicial system, Biden has granted 'a full and unconditional pardon' to his son Hunter. The pardon not only covers the gun-related and tax evasion charges Hunter has been convicted of, but also crimes he may be charged with in the future. The blanket pardon covers any case that may come down the line from Trump's justice department. Republicans may try to punish Hunter for trading on his father's name while Biden was VP, and receiving $10 million in payments from Chinese and other foreign companies. But no worries, the father has secured his son before signing off.
