After vowing for years he wouldn't interfere with the judicial system, Biden has granted 'a full and unconditional pardon' to his son Hunter. The pardon not only covers the gun-related and tax evasion charges Hunter has been convicted of, but also crimes he may be charged with in the future. The blanket pardon covers any case that may come down the line from Trump's justice department.
Republicans may try to punish Hunter for trading on his father's name while Biden was VP, and receiving $10 million in payments from Chinese and other foreign companies. But no worries, the father has secured his son before signing off.
In reality, the pardon is another parting injury Biden has inflicted on an already wounded Democratic Party. He has left the Dems no leg to stand on once Trump takes over and starts returning the favour. Worse still, Biden claimed he took the step because 'raw politics' by Republicans had 'infected' the process and Hunter was 'singled out only because he is my son'.
It's an argument with Trumpian overtones. Trump has long claimed the Democrats weaponised the justice system against him ever since he first got elected in 2016. Two impeachments and four indictments on 86 counts later, the jury of voters seemed to agree and sent him back to the White House. They saw the onslaught as Democratic overreach and lawfare.
