RG kar 'irregularities' probe transferred to CBI, rape accused sent to 14 days' judicial custody
Calcutta High Court on Friday directed CBI to probe the alleged financial irregularities in state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during the tenure of former principal Sandip Ghosh. «This court directs that the investigation be transferred to the CBI, given that the case involved serious allegations and multiple agencies handling different aspects of the case could lead to inefficiencies or inconsistency for comprehensive justice, unnecessary delays in the judicial process and potential misinterpretation of information thereby undermining effective and credible enforcement. Therefore, the investigation should not be fragmented between different agencies. Handing over the investigation to the CBI ensures consistency,» the HC order read. «The special investigation team (SIT) is directed to hand over the case diary, other records, CCTV footage, statements, if any, and all material and matters concerning the case to the CBI by 10 am tomorrow,» the court order said. The state government had constituted an SIT on August 16 to probe the allegation of financial irregularities at RG Kar since 2021 under Ghosh's tenure.

Starbucks' new CEO arrives with more power
Starbucks' incoming CEO Brian Niccol will have more power than his predecessor. Niccol, who is leaving Chipotle Mexican Grill, will become CEO and chairman the moment he joins Starbucks on September 9. By contrast, Laxman Narasimhan spent more than five months as the CEO-in-training under company patriarch Howard Schultz and he never took on the board chairman position. Only after an intense period of shadowing Schultz did he gain the ability to set the company's strategy. The vastly different handovers underscore the two executives' contrasting resumes-Narasimhan had no restaurant experience while Niccol has spent 20 years as a leader at Chipotle and Yum! Brands.

Was timing of Jennifer Lopez's divorce filing a masterstroke? Here's what attorney says
Ben Affleck had been living apart for several months, many were surprised by Jennifer Lopez's August 20 divorce petition. Reports claiming the pair lacked a prenuptial agreement shocked many, even if the breakup itself wasn't shocking. Although the couple eloped to Las Vegas in July 2022 and were officially married in Georgia a month later, a close source of Lopez's told various media sites that the pair might not have such an arrangement. Legal professionals, however, find this assertion doubtful, as per the reports of Yahoo entertainment.

ECB policymakers' views converging on Sept rate cut, sources say
European Central Bank policymakers are lining up behind another interest rate cut in September and only major data surprises in the coming weeks could delay the move, on and off record conversations with seven sources indicate. Financial markets already overwhelmingly expect a fresh rate cut next month, but policymakers have been circumspect on their next move after the central bank was criticised by some for too overtly committing itself before its first rate cut back in June. A raft of figures on growth, wages and prices in recent weeks has started to sway them and many are increasingly open to discussing their views, arguing that conditions laid out for a cut are being fulfilled.

Singh, along with Parvendra, a cleaner who recorded the video, and Bhanu, a driver who was present, were arrested for their roles in the incident. The woman involved has not yet been identified. Noida Chief Medical Officer Sunil Sharma stated that the incident revealed significant security lapses. A three-member committee, including Deputy CMOs Dr. Jaisalal and Dr. RP Singh, and forensic expert Dr. Rishabh Kumar Singh, has been tasked with investigating the incident. Jaisalal is responsible for the post-mortem house, according to the TOI report.

Max Verstappen says he's closer to the end of his F1 career than the start
Formula 1 race, Max Verstappen is clear he doesn't want to stick around for No. 400. At the age of 26, Verstappen is the youngest F1 driver to reach the 200-race milestone, and he's doing it in front of his home crowd at the Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday. «No,» Verstappen said bluntly, when asked Thursday if he could imagine another 200 F1 races — equivalent to just over eight more seasons — in his future. «So we passed halfway for sure, but it's been already of course an incredible ride,» he added. «It doesn't feel like 200, but of course we're doing a lot of races now in a year, so you add them quite quickly.»
