I would like to trust what CM Vijayan has said: Kerala Guv Arif Khan on Hema Committee report
Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan on Sunday said that he would like to trust Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan when he said that if the victims of sexual abuses in the Malayalam film industry come forward then the process of law will be set in motion. The Governor was reacting to the questions related to the Hema Committee report that revealed sexual abuses in the Malayalam film industry. The Opposition in Kerala has asked for an investigation into the revelations in the report. «I think the chief minister on record said that if they come with specific complaints, the process will be set in motion. He has already said it. I am not saying anything because I do not deal with the subject,» Khan said.

NASA decision against using a Boeing capsule to bring astronauts back adds to company's problems
NASA's announcement Saturday that it won't use a troubled Boeing capsule to return two stranded astronauts to Earth is a yet another setback for the struggling company, although the financial damage is likely to be less than the reputational harm. Once a symbol of American engineering and technological prowess, Boeing has seen its reputation battered since two 737 Max airliners crashed in 2018 and 2019, killing 346 people. The safety of its products came under renewed scrutiny after a panel blew out of a Max during a flight this January. And now NASA has decided that it is safer to keep the astronauts in space until February rather than risk using the Boeing Starliner capsule that delivered them to the international space station. The capsule has been plagued by problems with its propulsion system.

Russia oil trade kept global prices stable, says India
Volodymyr Zelenskyy's comments on India's crude oil trade with Russia may not have been in the right spirit, coming hours after his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kyiv during which New Delhi explained the market rationale for oil imports given its substantial requirements. Emphasising on India's «global influence», Zelenskyy suggested that India can help end Moscow's war in Ukraine by halting the oil trade that significantly funds the Russian military. «You can stop Vladimir Putin and halt his economy, and put him really in his place,» Zelenskyy told members of the Indian media on Friday night in Kyiv, referring to his meeting with Modi earlier in the day.

Paralympic Games: India have sent an 84-strong contingent, the biggest ever
Paris will again be the centre of attention when the City of Lights hosts the 17 h Paralympic Games. India have sent 84 para-athletes, who will be aiming for the country’s highest-ever medal haul at the Paralympics. India won a solitary medal in London 2012, a number that went up to 4 in 2016 Rio and 19 in 2021 Tokyo. If the athletes perform to potential, it could cross 25 in Paris. For the record, India’s cumulative medals tally between 1968, when it first participated at the Paralympics, and 2016, was 12. But then numbers don’t tell half the story. In Rio, for example, India had sent just 19 athletes. In Tokyo, the number swelled to 54. In Paris, India is sending its largest ever Paralympics contingent.

Trai move to curb fraud could ring in an SMS outage next month
Consumers may face disruptions in getting service and transactional messages from banks, financial institutions and ecommerce firms on their mobile phones from next month following a telecom regulator move aimed at curbing spam, specifically phishing attempts. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has asked telcos to stop transmitting messages containing URLs, OTT links, APKs (Android application packages) or call-back numbers that are not whitelisted--or registered with telcos--by senders from September 1. The regulator's ultimatum means banks, financial institutions and online platforms must get their templates and content registered with operators by the August 31 deadline, failing which messages containing these elements will be blocked.

Q1 growth seen in slow motion on manufacturing slump, lower government spending amid polls
urban consumption, softer manufacturing sector growth and moderate government expenditure amid elections may have dragged down growth in the first quarter of FY25. India's economy likely grew by a median 6.85% in the April-June period from a year earlier, according to an ET poll of 14 economists, slipping from 7.8% in the last quarter of FY24 and 8.2% in the year before. The growth estimates ranged from 6% to 7.5%. The median figure is lower than the RBI forecast of 7.1% for the quarter. «Slowing of manufacturing activity and lower government expenditure during the election period likely contributed to the slowdown in output growth in the quarter,» said Shreya Sodhani, regional economist, Barclays, pencilling in 7.1% gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the June quarter. The government will release June quarter growth data on August 30. The general elections held in the April-June period impacted government spending.

Wanyonyi follows up Olympic win with sizzling 800 metres in Lausanne
Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya inched ever so close to the men's 800 metres world record on Thursday, missing the global mark by two tenths of a second in winning the Lausanne Diamond League with the second fastest time in history. Wanyonyi, who turned 20 during the Paris Olympics, clocked one minute 41.11 seconds to narrowly miss the world mark of 1:40.91 set by Kenya's David Rudisha at the 2012 London Olympics. The young Kenyan ferociously chased the green lights in the inner lane that keep pace with the world record in ideal 25 C conditions, just missing Rudisha's record but matching Wilson Kipketer's 1997 time as second fastest ever run.
