Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress on Saturday said it can only mean that full-fledged statehood for J&K is unlikely in the immediate future. The Centre has increased the remit of J-K LG on matters related to decisions on police, officers of all-India services such as the IAS and the IPS, and sanctioning prosecution in various cases. The powers were given to the LG by the Union home ministry on Friday through an amendment to the rules issued under the Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, which was enacted for the bifurcation of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, while abrogating Article 370. In a post on X, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, «The only meaning that can be drawn from this notification is that full-fledged statehood for J&K does not seem likely in the immediate future.»

FIVE security WhatsApp Investigations Encounter in Doda; search operation in Kathua widened
armed forces and infiltrators on Tuesday afternoon in a remote forest area of Doda in Jammu and Kashmir. Officials said the exchange of fire took place during a cordon and search operation in Ghadi Bhagwah forest, following a tipoff regarding the movement of infiltrators in the area. «Two to three infiltrators were present in the area and heavy firing was going on in the area till late evening,» an official said. This is the third incident of violence in Jammu division in the last three days. Earlier, five armymen, including a junior commissioned officer, were killed and five others injured in Kathua district, while an armyman was injured on Sunday in Rajouri district. Following the attack on the Machedi-Kindli-Malhar road near Badnota village, a massive search operation was underway in the area which is along the border, around 150 km from the main Kathua town. Top brass of the J&K police visited the area and held a security review meeting. The joint search operation teams of the Army, police and CRPF were assisted by drone surveillance and elite para commandos. Sniffer dogs have been deployed in the area to look for infiltrators in the thick forest region. A team of the National Investigation Agency officials have also reached the spot where the incident happened and started its probe into the matter.

Cargo traffic across 12 major Indian ports rose 6.8 per cent to 69.08 million tonnes (MT) in June from 64.69 MT in the year-ago month, with ten ports showing positive growth while the remaining two witnessed a decline. Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Maharashtra recorded the highest growth in cargo handling at 15.12 per cent during the reporting month, followed by Cochin Port with 15.12 per cent, Kamarajar Port (10.70 per cent), Deendayal Port (8.57 per cent) and New Mangalore Port (8.53 per cent), according to the data released by the major ports' apex body Indian Ports Association (IPA). The 12 major ports are Deendayal (Kandla), Mumbai, Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Ennore (Kamarajar), Tuticorin (V O Chidambaranar), Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata (including Haldia) and Jawaharlal Nehru Port. According to the IPA, VO Chidambaranar Port's cargo traffic grew 7.73 per cent and Paradip Port 7.41 per cent growth, respectively, during the previous month.

Now, we have another disturbing fact to reckon with. The Hindu reports that in the April-June quarter of this 2023/24 fiscal year, fresh investments announced by corporates is just Rs. 44,000 crore. This is a 20-year low,» Ramesh said in a post on X. «Compare the decade of Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister with that of the non-biological PM. Investment as percentage of GDP (average over time) was 33.4% during the UPA and 28.7% in the Anyay-kaal,» he said.
