Supreme Court on Monday invalidated the Gujarat government's decision to grant remission to 11 convicts involved in the Bilkis Bano gangrape and the murder of seven of her family members amid the 2002 riots in the state. The court asserted that the remission orders lacked thoughtful consideration, deeming them «stereotyped.» Justices B V Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan, presiding over the bench, instructed the convicted individuals to surrender to jail authorities within a span of two weeks. In response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the remission, the bench deemed it maintainable and underscored that the Gujarat government was not the competent authority to issue such orders. Here's what the SC said The Supreme Court, while delivering the verdict, said, «We need not have gone into the other issues. But for sake of completion, we have. Rule of law is breached because the Gujarat government usurped power not vested in it and abused its power. On that ground also, the remission orders deserve to be quashed,» the bench said while pronouncing the judgement which spanned over 100 pages.

Bilkis Bano case Live Updates: The Supreme Court is expected to deliver a verdict today on the Bilkis Bano case, which involves petitions challenging the remission granted to 11 convicts. The case filed against 11 convicts during 2002 Gujarat riots, that broke out after the Godhra train-burning incident, involved convictions on charges on gangrape of Bilkis Bano and murder of seven of her family members.The gangrape victim Bilkis Bano was 21 years old and five months pregnant when the incident took place while fleeing communal riots.

Bilkis Bano convicts remission case on Monday, January 8. The court had earlier heard a batch of pleas that challenged the remission granted to convicts in the Bilkis Bano gangrape case. A bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan had on October 12 last year reserved its verdict after an 11-day hearing on the petitions, including the one filed by Bano.

MUMBAI : Foreign portfolio investment (FPI) net inflows into Indian equities and debt in 2023-24 have reached a nine-year high, showed data from the National Securities Depository Ltd (NSDL). At ₹2.68 trillion, this is just ₹9,625 crore away from 2014-15’s record net inflows of ₹2.77 trillion. In monthly average terms, foreign portfolio investors have invested net ₹29,780 crore in Indian equities and debt this fiscal.
