Possible increase in auto loan interest rates could impact PV sales: Maruti Suzuki's Shashank Srivastava
Passenger vehicle sales in India could be weighed down by increase in interest rates for auto loans, if there is no reduction in repo rates going forward as the industry gears up for a single-digit growth this year, according to Maruti Suzuki India Senior Executive Officer (Marketing and Sales) Shashank Srivastava. With a high base of record 41.08 lakh units in 2023, passenger vehicle (PV) sales this year could grow in single digit with the overall economic growth of the country being a positive factor, he said. «The auto industry growth is largely dependent on the growth in the overall economy, the GDP per capita growth that's projected 6-6.5 per cent.

October-December 2023 speaks volumes about FMCG demand revival
reduction in prices and what companies see as a sign of recovery in consumption. Companies like Adani Wilmar, Marico, Dabur and Godrej Consumer Products on Thursday and Friday said in investor notes that there has been volume-led growth in their sales in the October-December period. But value growth came under pressure as companies cut prices from early 2023 to pass on the benefit of lower raw-material costs. Deforestation in Brazilian Amazon halved in 2023
Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon fell by half last year, according to figures released Friday, as President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's government bolstered environmental policing to crack down on surging destruction. However, the news was far less bright from the crucial Cerrado savanna below the rainforest, where clear-cutting hit a new annual record last year, rising by 43 percent from 2022, according to the national space research agency's DETER surveillance program. Satellite monitoring detected 5,152 square kilometers (nearly 2,000 square miles) of forest cover destroyed in the Brazilian Amazon last year, down 50 percent from 2022. That still represented a loss 29 times the size of Washington DC in Brazil's share of the world's biggest rainforest, whose carbon-absorbing trees play a vital role in curbing climate change. Meanwhile, the Cerrado, a biodiversity hotspot whose ecosystems are intricately linked with the Amazon's, lost over 7,800 square kilometers of native vegetation last year, the highest since monitoring began in 2018. «We saw some important victories on the environment in 2023. The significant reduction in deforestation in the Amazon was a highlight,» said Mariana Napolitano of environmental group WWF-Brasil. «But unfortunately we aren't seeing the same trend in the Cerrado… That is harming the biome and the extremely important ecosystem services it provides.

Delhi excise scam: Court grants interim bail to liquor businessman Sameer Mahendru
Delhi court has granted two-week interim bail to liquor businessman Sameer Mahendru in a money laundering case related to alleged irregularities in the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy. Special Judge M K Nagpal granted the relief to Mahendru, managing director of liquor distributor Indospirit on an application moved by him seeking relief due to his wife's health issues. The judge noted that during his earlier interim bail granted in the case, the accused did not try to influence any witness or tamper with the evidence in the case. «He cannot be considered to be a flight risk and there is also nothing on record to show or infer that he had ever tried to influence any witness or tamper with or destroy any evidence of this case,» the judge said in an order passed on January 5. According to the prosecution, Mahendru was one of the major beneficiaries of the violations of the excise policy as he was not only running an alcoholic beverage manufacturing unit but also given a wholesale licence along with some retail licences in the name of his relatives. Because of the alleged irregularities and violations, Mahendru earned around Rs 50 crore profit, the prosecution claimed. The ED had registered an enforcement case information report against Mahendru under the relevant provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
