China's economic slowdown alarms international leaders, investors: Report
China's economic slowdown has alarmed international leaders and investors, as per CNN. For the first time in decades, the world's second economy is itself in trouble. Hong Kong's Hang Seng (HSI) Index slid into a bear market on Friday, having fallen more than 20 per cent from its recent peak in January. The Chinese yuan, last week, fell to its lowest level in 16 years, prompting the central bank to make its biggest defence of the currency on record by setting a much higher rate to the dollar than the estimated market value. The issue is that, after a rapid spurt of activity earlier this year following the lifting of COVID lockdowns, growth is stalling.

'Legacy admissions' under fire at US universities
So-called "legacy admissions" — long a standard practice at many prestigious American universities, including Harvard and Stanford — are coming under increased scrutiny, though it's unlikely they'll go without a fight, even in a country that extols success through individual merit. But cracks are beginning to form, galvanized by a recent Supreme Court case and an Education Department investigation sparked by a legal complaint aiming to take down what one university president called an «aristocratic» system unfit for a democracy. Legacy admissions don't guarantee entry into a particular university, but they do give hopefuls an edge: If a prospective student can boast that, in addition to having a solid academic record, they are the child or relative of an alumnus, that can tip the scales in their favor during the very competitive admissions process. Harvard University's acceptance rate for «legacy» students from 2014 to 2019 was 33 percent, according to the student newspaper — compared to its overall acceptance rate of six percent.

Buying on dips likely to support gold prices
gold closed almost flat at $1,940 on Friday as US treasuries fell, despite a weak monthly US job report. The surge in yields on Friday boosted the US dollar index, thus mitigating the impact of a weak job report. However, the yellow metal was up nearly 1.37% for the week as yields were lower in the week ending September 1. The US non-farm payroll report for August was softer than expected.

India's rice area grows on higher prices, cotton sowing lags
farmers have planted 39.8 million hectares (98.3 million acres) with rice, up 3.7% on the same period last year, farm ministry data showed on Friday, as record high prices prompted farmers to expand the area. Higher rice planting could alleviate supply concerns in the world's second biggest producer and consumer of the grain.India surprised buyers in July by imposing a ban on the export of widely consumed non-basmati white rice, following a ban on broken rice exports last year. New Delhi's decision to ban overseas shipments of its largest rice export category would be likely to roughly halve shipments by the world's largest exporter of the grain. «Farmers are very interested in rice, but the weather is not supporting the planted crop.

Wall Street Week Ahead: Investors lower outlook for consumers as student loans, credit card debts pile up
consumer stress are prompting some fund managers to grow more conservative in their outlooks, even as the broad stock market continues to rally. While unemployment remains near historic lows, the Federal Reserve's inflation-fighting interest rate hikes are starting to weigh on households. Consumer confidence fell more than expected in August, while delinquency rates among credit cards issued by smaller banks are the highest on record, according to data from the Apollo Group. Department store Nordstrom said last week that delinquencies on its store cards are now higher than pre-pandemic levels. Rival Macy's said it expects late payments to reduce credit-card revenues by 41% from the previous quarter. Payments on approximately $1.1 trillion of federal student loans will resume in October, potentially setting consumers up for a «payment shock» of $500 or more each month, according to a study by TransUnion. «The U.S.

As IMF reforms kick in, inflation in Pak stays high at 27.4 per cent
Pakistan's inflation rate remained over the target in August at 27.4 per cent as reforms outlined as requirements for an IMF loan make it more difficult to control price pressures, ARY News reported citing the official data released on Friday. After the avoidance of a sovereign debt default in July thanks to a USD 3 billion loan programme of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Pakistan is on a difficult road to economic recovery under a caretaker administration. Reforms related to the bailout, such as loosening import limits and demanding the removal of subsidies, have already fuelled annual inflation, which increased to a record 38.0 per cent in May. In addition, interest rates were increased, and the rupee dropped to record lows.

British singer Faye Fantarrow passes away at 21. This is what happened
Faye Fantarrow, a British singer and songwriter, aged 21, has passed away at her home. Her mother, Pam Fantarrow, revealed that she succumbed to a rare glioma brain tumor, which she was diagnosed with in September 2022. Faye had previously battled leukemia twice, initially at the age of 8 and then again at 13. Fantarrow, hailing from Sunderland, England, was signed by Dave Stewart, the Eurythmics star, and her debut EP titled «AWOL» was released in February through Stewart's label, Bay Street Records. This EP was recorded in the Bahamas. Dave Stewart expressed his devastation at Faye's passing, describing her as a joyful and talented artist. He also praised the resilience shown by Faye and her mother in the face of adversity.Faye Fantarrow, born on April 28, 2002, was recognized by BBC Music Introducing as «One to Watch.» In 2021, she was honored with Alan Hull's annual Songwriting Award. To fund experimental treatment at City of Hope in California, Faye launched a fundraising campaign, raising over £235,000 (approximately $300,000). Unfortunately, she was unable to return for follow-up care due to her deteriorating health. Any surplus funds from the campaign were directed towards charitable contributions to further research in her memory. Despite the challenges she faced, Faye Fantarrow remained committed to her passion for writing, singing and performing. She once said, «Life very rarely goes to plan, but the plan was always to write, sing, and perform, and I've been lucky to be able to do that.»

Premier Delhi hotel rates soar as G20 delegates flock to city
NEW DELHI : Average room rates for premier New Delhi hotels are set to triple next week, reaching a range of ₹18,000- ₹25,000, amid heightened demand driven by the arrival of thousands of delegates from 20 nations for the G20 summit across 9 and 10 September. ADR includes room rates, food and beverage, and other services availed of by customers, but it only counts the occupied rooms in a hotel, not the empty ones.
