Citi Forbes actress Nazi Jewellery Auction of Austrian billionaire Heidi Horten's jewellery with Nazi connection cancelled
Christie's has cancelled the second auction of jewels belonging to an Austrian billionaire, whose German husband made his fortune under the Nazis, following «intense scrutiny, it said Friday. The auction house held a first controversial online and in-person sale in Geneva of part of the large stash of more than 700 jewels in May, and had been scheduled to hold a second round in November. But in a statement it said „Christie's has taken the decision not to proceed with further sales of property from the Estate of Heidi Horten.“ With just a portion of the collection sold, the auction eclipsed previous records set by Christie's in sales of properties that belonged to actress Elizabeth Taylor in 2011 and the „Maharajas and Mughal Magnificence“ collection in 2019, both of which exceeded $100 million. Hopes had been high for similar results from the second round. But following an initial report in the New York Times, Christie's sent a statement to AFP confirming that it had cancelled the second round, acknowledging that „the sale of the Heidi Horten jewellery collection has provoked intense scrutiny.“ »The reaction to it has deeply affected us and many others, and we will continue to reflect on it," it said. A large number of Jewish groups had asked Christie's to halt the initial Horten sale in May, describing it as «indecent», and demanding that the auction house do more to determine how much of it came from victims of the Nazis. The extraordinary collection belonged to Heidi Horten who died last year aged 81, with a fortune of $2.9 billion, according to Forbes. A report published in January 2022 by historians commissioned by the Horten Foundation said Heidi Horton's husband Helmut Horton, who died in Switzerland in 1987, had

UPS Waters Glacier show country India sees hottest, driest August since records began
India has reported its hottest and driest August since national records began more than a century ago, the latest in a string of records broken worldwide as climate change intensifies. August falls in the middle of India's annual monsoon, a season that usually brings up to 80 percent of the country's yearly rainfall. Heavy downpours brought deadly floods to parts of India's north during the month, but on the whole, rains were much more subdued, resulting in record heat. «Average mean and maximum temperatures in August 2023 were the record highest since 1901,» the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. «The large rainfall deficiency and weak monsoon condition is the main reason.» IMD data showed August average rainfall of 161.7 millimetres (6.4 inches) this year, 30.1mm lower than the previous August record in 2005. With millions of farmers dependent on monsoons for their crops, summer rains are vital for India's food security and the livelihood of its rural workforce. The monsoon occurs when summer heat warms the landmass of the subcontinent, causing the air to rise and sucking in cooler Indian Ocean winds, which then produce enormous volumes of rain. But it also brings destruction every year in the form of landslides and floods.

Target band country moody’s Moody’s raises India’s growth forecast for 2023 to 6.7%, post April-June GDP spurt
India’s growth forecast to 6.7% in 2023 from 5.5% projected earlier, as the Indian economy recorded 7.8% growth in the April-June quarter. “Strong services expansion and capital expenditures propelled India’s 7.8% real GDP growth in the second quarter from a year ago,” Moody’s said in its report. However, the rating and research agency lowered the 2024 forecast down to 6.1% from the 6.5% projected earlier. “Since the second quarter outperformance creates a high base in 2023, we have lowered our 2024 growth forecast from 6.5% to 6.1%. Given the robust underlying economic momentum, we also recognize further upside risk to India’s economic growth performance,” it said. On the inflation front, the rating agency expects inflation to average 5.7% in 2023, a tad below the Reserve Bank of India’s upper target band of 6%. In July, inflation at 7.4%, crossed the Reserve Bank of India’s upper target band for the first time.

COST UPS Digital country end Share of affordable housing shrinking; upper end of the market going berserk: Gulam Zia, Knight Frank
Gulam Zia, Senior ED, Knight Frank, says “Home loan interest rates have been skyrocketing, perhaps the highest in almost about eight-nine odd years. But that has impacted the bottom to mid end of the market. The upper end is not so dependent, especially the luxury segment is not so dependent on home loans and that demand is going unabashedly up and the transactions there are going unbelievably high. That is where the share of affordable housing has been shrinking.”What are your thoughts on sustainability of this kind of momentum in real estate demand and where is the affordability coming from? One of the biggest drivers being cited is higher affordability. What are your thoughts there?Your question is what justifies this kind of euphoria? It is very difficult to say. A couple of thoughts; the wealth creation that we have seen in at least a year and a half or two in spite of the global gloom etc. Things have really gone well for India and that is where the traction in residential or home buys, home buying has been pretty good.
