Learn with ETMarkets: How to trade in crude oil amid market volatility?
crude oil market is no stranger to volatility, and 2024 has been no exception. The combination of geopolitical tensions, OPEC’s decisions, and global economic shifts has kept oil prices fluctuating. For investors, this uncertainty presents both challenges and opportunities. This article explores the current crude oil trends in India, offering a comprehensive outlook on how these factors are influencing the market and what strategic actions investors can take. Geopolitical Tensions and Impact on Oil Prices The ongoing geopolitical conflicts, especially in the Middle East, are driving significant price movements in crude oil. The Israel-Hamas conflict has added a layer of unpredictability to an already volatile market. Any escalation in the war has the potential to disrupt supply chains, leading to sharp spikes in crude prices. This was evident when tensions flared in early October 2024, pushing prices upward as concerns grew over potential disruptions to oil fields in the region. However, when de-escalation talks are in progress, prices tend to fall just as sharply. The United States has been exerting pressure on Iran and Hamas to avoid targeting oil fields, which has added a level of uncertainty to future price movements.

G20 role in climate finance critical: UN body chief
UN climate chief Simon Stiell on Saturday urged them to send a strong signal that climate action is core business for the world's biggest economies and step up climate finance globally as it requires action both inside and outside the COP process. His remarks come as negotiators here continue to brainstorm on finalising post-2025 climate finance goals without making much headway on the latest iteration of the draft decision text during multiple negotiations at CO. It is believed that the leaders' declaration by G20 leaders at Rio may give a push to the ongoing negotiation here. «Here in Baku negotiators are working around the clock on a new climate finance goal. There is a long way to go, but everyone is very aware of the stakes, at the halfway point in the COP. Climate finance progress outside of our process is equally crucial, and the G20's role is mission-critical,» said Stiell.

UN climate process needs urgent overhaul: Experts
fossil fuel deals, a group of prominent scientists, advocates, and policy leaders — including former UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon, former head of the UN climate change body Christiana Figueres, and former Ireland President Mary Robinson — have called for an urgent overhaul of the UN climate process. They argue that it needs «a shift from negotiation to implementation». «28 COPs have delivered us with the policy framework to achieve this. However, its current structure cannot deliver change at exponential speed and scale, which is essential to ensure a safe climate landing for humanity. This is what compels our call for a fundamental overhaul of the COP,» they said in an open letter to UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres and executive secretary of UN climate change secretariat Simon Stiell. Calling for "COP reform", they said the shift is needed to enable the COP to deliver on agreed commitments and ensure urgent energy transition and phase-out of fossil energy.

Global climate leaders call for urgent overhaul of UN climate talks process, saying it needs shift from negotiation to implementation
COP officials facilitating discussions about fossil fuel deals, a group of prominent scientists, advocates and policy leaders including Ban Ki-Moon, former secretary-general of the United nations, Christiana Figueres, former chief of the UN climate change body, and Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland, have called for urgent overhaul of the UN climate process saying it needs “a shift from negotiation to implementation” as the existing approach is no longer fit for purpose. “28 COPs have delivered us with the policy framework to achieve this. However, its current structure simply cannot deliver the change at exponential speed and scale, which is essential to ensure a safe climate landing for humanity. This is what compels our call for a fundamental overhaul of the COP,” they said in an open letter to UN secretary-general António Guterres and executive secretary of the UN climate change secretariat, Simon Stiell. fossil fuel lobbyists with 1,773 registered participants are only outnumbered by delegations of three countries — host Azerbaijan (2,229), COP30 host Brazil (1,914), and Turkiye (1,862). The list of lobbyists include 24 from India as well. Among Indians, mostly (17) came as a delegation from the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), three from CII and remaining four representing different NGOs. The list of Indians also shows the name of a senior functionary, Pravin Dongre (executive director) from public sector oil company, Indian Oil Corporation. The list, accessed by TOI, mentioned him as nominated by an NGO, Griha Council, as its guest. Dongre told TOI that he is here to promote global biofuel alliance. He, however, didn't have a clear answer as to why he was in the list of NGO's guest.

Trump's health head is Bob's your uncle
Bobby Kennedy Jr as the incoming secretary of health. Even Trumpites are secretly scratching their J D Vance-style beards trying to make sense of bringing in an anti-Covid vaccine advocate as America's health honcho, while Trump himself had praised the vaccine during his first presidency as 'one of the greatest achievements of mankind'. So, is this counterintuitive hire the secret sauce to Trump's corpo-political genius? Kennedy's resume certainly screams, 'Ambulances are for cowards!' And yet… So, is there any method in this madcapness? Hiring the 'worst' candidate, Trump may reckon, will bring expectations down so low that even ho-hum policy action will come across as fab. Unburdened by 'traditional wisdom', Trump's outliers — including incoming director of national intelligence Tulsi 'Putin is swell' Gabbard — may innovate in ways that may seem ludicrous but could lead to, well, if not revolutionary breakthroughs, then at least keeping the polarisation pot boiling.

Congress complains to EC about ads being strategically placed to promote Mahayuti campaign
Congress has complained to the Election Commission of India of ads being placed strategically within Marathi language television serials to promote the Mahayuti campaign. One Marathi television channel has been running the ads since yesterday which show a hoarding of the Shiv sena campaign slogan after a particular scene in the serial. General secretary of the Maharashtra Congress Sachin Sawant complained to the State Election Commission about the placement of the ads. “ In serials after a particular scene is over it cuts to a different scene but here they have shown a road with a hoarding put up by the Shiv Sena on the road. This is blatant paid ads and it is not accidental as it has happened in all the serials running in the particular entertainment channel.”said Sawant to ET. Sawant has approached the State Election Commission officials to take action against those involved. “ Firstly an FIR needs to be filed against the channel as well as the Shiv Sena(shinde) which has inserted these ads blatantly. Secondly it's clear that the channel has taken money to place these ads so an Economic Offence should also be registered against those involved.”said Sawant.
