How do we want our Gods? More human than human
Ram sport a beard? And if he did, or didn't, how are we to know? If an overwhelming number of people believe that he was clean-shaven, isn't that enough for us to consider the matter settled then — that the deity-king was as smooth on chin as Lord Salman is on chest? The 'beard' issue has been festering in my head for quite some time now. The heady partnership of mob and media may not have picked up on it yet. But a recent conversation about 'How on Earth did we fix the way our gods look?' — including the remarkable transformation of the West Asian, brown-skinned, dark-haired Jesus into a blond Haight Ashbury hippie dude — made my salt'n'pepper thoughts on the matter bristle again. One thing's for sure — as much as one can be sure about things like these: it's certainly unlikely that (wo)man created god in her/his own image. You only have to see your neighbours. Unless, that is, your neighbours' ancestors couldn't stand the idea of normal-looking devis aur devas, so had them 'made' super-real/surreal, desi Barbie-style perfect?

India is paving its way toward a renaissance
sarsanghchalak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh stated, with a desire to “keep senses in fervour", that there is no need to injure anyone else’s thinking or belief in our zeal. Whatever those who believe that this entire event is just an election gimmick should consider, the crowd that has been gathering in Ayodhya for the past week and its behaviour demonstrates that we are experiencing a cultural renaissance. If this had not happened, Diwali would not have been celebrated on 22 January in Bengal and Bihar, both of which are known for casteism and sectarian discord.

India Inc. has a weak show in 2024 Padma honours list
Just four persons from the world of business were named for the country’s top civilian honours ahead of Republic Day, the least-represented major field for the Padma awards this year. Their share among all recipients—3% out of total 132 awardees—has been tiny for two years in a row, a Mint analysis of data from the home affairs ministry showed. Last year, three of the 106 Padma awardees (2.8%) were from the ‘trade and industry’ category, a sharp decline from a 7.8% share in 2020 and 7.1% in 2022.

Barbie versus Oppenheimer at the Oscars: Bias played a role
Oscar nominations rarely make anyone sit up the way this year’s have. Was it a classic preference for serious cinema or an old gender bias that swayed Hollywood’s Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences? Of last summer’s two most hotly raved-about movies, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, the award contenders picked for 2024 display a clear tilt towards the biopic of a scientist credited with the world’s first nuclear weapon. It was nominated this week for awards in 13 categories, including for Best Picture and Best Director, the two big ones, while the feminist remake of an iconic doll’s legend got eight call-outs, with Gerwig left out of the contest as an award-worthy director.
