EV makers seek stability in incentives, call for long-term subsidy assurance before FAME III roll out
electric vehicles, sections of EV makers said this time they wanted a subsidy policy with a definite timeline, rather than one that would be abruptly cut off like the previous one. “New changes are too sudden, especially for the automobile industry with its long lead times. We would want the new subsidy regime to last for at least two to three years to truly benefit the industry,” Amitabh Saran, chief executive of electric three-wheeler maker Altigreen, told ET. The Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme was originally launched in 2015 to encourage the adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles. Under it, a subsidy was provided to EV makers who used it to lower the prices of their products. The second edition, FAME-II, was introduced in 2019 and went on till March 2024 when it was scrapped. There has since been a steep slowdown in EV sales, according to a report by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations.

Despite KCR's efforts to keep flock together, BRS at receiving end with desertion of MLAs, MLCs
Bharat Rashtra Samithi is now faced with the defection of its MLAs and MLCs to the ruling Congress in Telangana. Till date, seven MLAs and six MLCs of BRS switched over to the Congress since the Assembly polls. Several other leaders, including BRS Rajya Sabha member K Keshav Rao, his daughter and Hyderabad Mayor Vijaya Laxmi R Gadwal, also joined the Congress. Keshav Rao has, however, quit his post after joining Congress. With the ruling Congress and the BJP looking to consolidate their gains in the Assembly and Lok Sabha polls, the BRS faces an uphill task to resurrect itself following the exodus of leaders.

What is Form 16? How to download Form 16 to file income tax return (ITR)
Form 16 is a certificate issued by an employer under section 203 of the Income-tax Act, 1961, which pertains to the deduction of tax at source (TDS) from the income earned as salary during a financial year. The employer provides it to show the tax deducted from the employee's salary, which is then deposited with the government against the employee's PAN. The TDS certificate contains a comprehensive overview of the salary amount disbursed to the employee and the tax that has been deducted from it. Additionally, if an employee chooses the old income tax regime and presents investment proofs, this information will be included in Form 16. The employer must give the employee their Form 16 if the employer withholds taxes from the employee's salary.

PM Modi says efforts being taken to restore peace in Manipur
Narendra Modi broke his «silence» on the situation in Manipur, which has been on the boil since May 3 last year, when he asserted in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday during the reply on motion of thanks to the President's address that all efforts were being taken to restore peace and welcomed suggestions and help from all quarters in this regard. He also appealed to the Opposition to rise above party politics and warned those «adding fuel to the fire». In his reply that lasted a little over 100 minutes, the PM also spoke on the NEET paper leak, assuring the youth that their future will not be jeopardised and those guilty would not be spared. Modi also took jibes at the Opposition which staged a walkout 30 minutes into his speech as the Chair did not heed to its demand for an intervention by Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, leaving the floor open for the PM to have his say uninterrupted. Unlike in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Modi finally heeded to the Opposition criticism that he skipped the Manipur ethnic crisis in his speeches both during the election campaign and in his public utterances since he assumed office for the third consecutive term.

CJI Chandrachud advises SEBI, SAT to be cautious, pitches for more tribunal benches
Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud on Thursday said that regulators like SEBI and appellate forums like the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) need to exercise caution when there is a surge in the stock market as they assume immense national importance in fostering a stable and predictable investment environment. Inaugurating the new appellate tribunal premises in Mumbai, the CJI Chandrachud said: “The more you see the surge in the stock market, the greater the role, I believe, for SEBI and SAT, as institutions which will exercise caution, celebrate the successes but at the same time, ensure that the backbone is stable.”
