Airfares are soaring amid turbulence in civil aviation
With India’s civil aviation sector going through turbulence, fliers are being forced to tighten their budgetary belts, as airfares have soared at a dizzying angle. Busy routes have gone up by as much as 30% at the start of the summer rush. For a quick explanation, Exhibit ‘A’ is Tata-run Vistara’s recent declaration of scaling back operations by about 25-30 flights per day, or roughly 10% of its capacity, amid a shortage of pilots.

Give us a timeline of implementing the new rules: DGCA to airlines
Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has sought a timeline from airlines as to when they can implement the new pilot rest duty rules. DGCA’s move comes after the Delhi High Court, last week asked the regulator for a tentative date for implementation of the revised duty time norms for pilots. The court was hearing a writ petition filed by multiple pilot unions, challenging the DGCA rules on pilot’s duty hours. Prominent among them is a case filed by the Federation of Indian Pilots, which has more than 5,000 members.

Pee-Gate: It is airline's discretion how much alcohol you can get in-flight, says DGCA
DGCA), in response to a Supreme Court (SC) petition, stated that airlines have the authority to restrict the amount of alcohol served on flights to prevent passenger inebriation and subsequent unruly behavior. This statement follows incidents on two Air India flights where passengers, allegedly intoxicated, urinated on fellow travelers. Unfortunately, there’s no common crackdown rule or measure by the airlines’ regulatory body. It all depends on the airlines you’ve booked your flight with. Regulatory Framework

India's petrol consumption doubles in a decade
India now consumes more than double the petrol it used a decade ago as new and larger vehicles are selling at a scorching pace. Diesel consumption is up by about a third while the overall oil demand is up by half. «The data show that fossil fuels continue to be in demand despite policy push for EVs (electric vehicles) and renewables. From the trajectory of demand numbers, it appears that oil will continue to be in demand for some time and peak oil demand in India is not likely before 2040,» said Mukesh Surana, CEO, Ratnagiri Refinery & Petrochemicals Ltd. «It's a positive trend for Indian refiners, at least for the next 10 years.» Between 2013-14 and 2023-24, the annual consumption of petrol increased 117%, diesel 31%, aviation turbine fuel 50% and LPG 82%, according to the petroleum and natural gas ministry data. Kerosene consumption slumped 93% during this period as the government's clean cooking drive increased access to LPG.
