Mumbai: Flight fares likely to shoot up as airlines plans to cancel flights till March
Civil Aviation on Tuesday said that it had to force Mumbai Airport to reduce flights as the airport had given excessive slots which was causing congestion leading to a situation where aircraft are hovering above the airport for as long as 60 minutes. An airport slot is a period of time during which an aircraft can take off or land. It said that the airport operator didn’t take steps to streamline and regulate the air traffic movements.

Mumbai Airport to reduce scheduled flights and restrict the movement of business jets during peak hours, aiming to alleviate congestion and improve on-time departures, the Economic Times reported. The decision is expected to impact around 40 flights and disrupt the operations of private jets frequently used by top business houses in the country. The Airport Authority of India (AAI), responsible for air navigation services, has directed the airport to decrease aircraft movement from 46 to 44 during rush hours and from 44 to 42 during non-peak hours.

Taiwan's defence ministry said on Sunday it had detected eight Chinese balloons crossing the Taiwan Strait in the previous 24 hours, of which five flew across Taiwan, the second day in a row is has reported a large number of balloons. Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory despite the strong objections of the government in Taipei, has complained since December about the balloons, saying they are a threat to aviation safety and attempt at psychological warfare. In its daily report on Chinese military activities, Taiwan's defence ministry said it spotted the first balloon on Saturday morning and the last one mid-afternoon, having spotted the same number of balloons on Friday.

Emphasising that the civil aviation sector provides huge economic multipliers, he also said that greater connectivity has led to greater economic development. Air Turbine Fuel (ATF) accounts for around 40 per cent of the operational costs of an airline. Scindia said that after taking over as the civil aviation minister, he reached out to various states and UTs to reduce the value-added tax (VAT) on jet fuel.
