The matter was handled deftly, and secrecy was maintained till the veterans returned.

Narendra Modi on Monday met family members of former Bihar chief minister late Karpoori Thakur, who was bestowed Bharat Ratna, the nation's highest civilian award, last month. The family members of the prominent socialist leader, led by his son Rajya Sabha member and JD(U) leader Ram Nath Thakur, met the prime minister at his 7, Lok Kalyan Marg residence. «Very happy to meet the family members Bharat Ratna awardee Jananayak Karpoori Thakur ji. Delhi High Court on Monday granted bail to four convicts serving life imprisonment in the murder case of TV journalist Soumya Vishwanathan. A bench of Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Manoj Jain suspended the sentence of Ravi Kapoor, Amit Shukla, Baljeet Singh Malik and Ajay Kumar till the pendency of their appeals challenging their conviction and sentence. The bench noted that the convicts have been in custody for 14 years. The high court had on January 23 asked the Delhi Police to respond to the appeals filed by the four convicts.

BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty has improved and he is «quite stable», an official said on Sunday. Chakraborty, 73, was admitted to a private hospital here on Saturday, after he complained of severe chest pain. «He is recuperating well, is fully conscious, well-oriented, active, and has consumed a soft diet. He will undergo certain investigations before his discharge,» the official of the medical facility said. The popular actor has already undergone an MRI, along with other medical tests at the hospital.

Congress on Saturday said the White Paper on the economy was brought by the government to hide the "dark truths" of this country and divert attention from the burning issues of unemployment, price rise, farmers' stress and the state of the economy. Speaking in the short-duration discussion on the White Paper brought by the government, Congress leader K C Venugopal alleged in Rajya Sabha that the government has used this as a defence for itself by diverting from the issues before the country. He also accused the government of using the Bharat Ratna award for political purposes, even though he welcomed the award to former prime ministers Narasimha Rao and Chaudhary Charan Singh and agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan. Venugopal asked why the finance ministry did not even mention the impact of demonetisation in the White Paper and why it does not make any mention of unemployment rate, poverty and rupee value in the White Paper on the Indian economy.

RLD joining BJP-led NDA ahead of the general elections, the regional party leader Jayant Singh on Saturday praised the Modi government for honouring his grandfather and former prime minister Chaudhary Charan Singh with Bharat Ratna. He said that only a government «rooted to ground realties» could have taken such a decision. As soon as Singh started thanking the government for the honour in Rajya Sabha, Congress members objected and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge wanted to know the rule under which the RLD leader was allowed to speak. Kharge said it is a matter of pride and he «salutes» former prime ministers P V Narasimha Rao and Charan Singh and agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan, all of whom are being conferred with Bharat Ratna.

While the UPA government reserved all three Bharat Ratnas during its 10 years to non-politicians (CNR Rao, Bhimsen Joshi and Sachin Tendulkar), the Modi government has made politically astute choices in selecting each of the awardees. Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award to former PM Chaudhary Charan Singh, was the moment RLD leader Jayant Chaudhary was waiting for. Chaudhary, who was not visible for the past one week amid speculations of his party joining NDA, surfaced on Friday and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the honour given to his grandfather. «This is a big day. It is an emotional and memorable moment for me. I thank the President, the Government of India and especially Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This has sent a big message to the entire country. The sentiments of the country are related to this decision of the government,» Chaudhary told media persons in Delhi. «Modiji has proved that he understands the basic sentiments of the country.» On a question of whether he is ready to join hands with BJP, Chaudhary simply said: «Is there anything left to be done? How can I refuse.» With this, the process of RLD joining the NDA in UP is complete. Sources told ET that a seat-sharing agreement has been reached between the two parties. As part of the deal, RLD will get two Lok Sabha seats — Baghpat and Bijnor — and one Rajya Sabha nomination. It will also get one cabinet position in UP and one MLC seat. Sources told ET that RLD will name senior party leader Sompal Shashtri for the RS seat given by the BJP.
