Karnataka Congress government will be paying Rs 15 lakhs as compensation to the family of a man killed by an elephant from the state in AICC leader Rahul Gandhi’s Lok Sabha constituency of Wayanad in Kerala. Gandhi, who broke away from his scheduled Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra as a part of his Lok Sabha campaign to visit the victim's family on Saturday, had asked the Karnataka government to compensate the family on humanitarian grounds. The Karnataka government’s move comes at a time when Lok Sabha elections are a few months away, with the ruling Left Democratic Front in Kerala being a part of the Congress’ INDIA alliance for the Parliament polls, but a rival at the regional level. In a letter to Gandhi, Karnataka forest minister Eshwar Khandre said that his department plans to host a meeting with forest departments of Kerala and TamilNadu to come up with an action plan for avoiding man-animal conflicts. Karnataka, the minister wrote, had the highest number of elephants in India at 6,395. “Due to several reasons, forest cover is decreasing and the number of elephants coming into the human habitat is increasing,” he added.

The U.S. government is giving chip maker GlobalFoundries $1.5 billion in grants to build and expand facilities in New York and Vermont, the first major award in a program that aims to reinvigorate domestic chip production. The award from the Commerce Department kicks off what is expected to be a series of cash injections into semiconductor manufacturing projects in Arizona, Texas, New York and Ohio in the coming weeks.

Freshworks has cancelled the performance-based stock award of 6 million shares to founder and chief executive Girish Mathrubootham, according to a regulatory filing. Nasdaq-listed Freshworks’ board said the decision was taken in the backdrop of the macroeconomic headwinds that have created challenges for the company’s stock price. “As a result of macroeconomic conditions that are entirely outside the control of the company’s leadership team, the stock price hurdles were too far ahead of the current stock price for the CEO PRSU award to have the retention value expected at the time the award was granted,” the company said in the filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on February 16.

Supreme Court judge Sanjay Kishan Kaul on Saturday said a little bit of underlying friction between the judiciary and the executive is good to maintain checks and balances in a democracy. Addressing a function to confer the Sansad Ratna Awards on parliamentarians, Justice Kaul said the checks and balances of a democracy were enunciated in the Constitution which provides for an administration, a legislature and the court. «Since we have a democracy based on the first past the post concept where most governments would be having less than 50 per cent of the votes, the court plays an important role in maintaining a check and balance on the system,» he said. Justice Kaul, quoting a former chief justice, said «a little bit of underlying tension is good. If things are very hunky-dory between the judiciary and the executive, then we have a problem».

NEW DELHI : The government is finalizing a carrot-and-stick approach to ensure that mining companies move swiftly towards production at mineral blocks awarded to them at auctions, and to make delays unpalatable. The stick first: delays in work at every milestone within an overall timeline will attract penalties. And the carrot: if delays in meeting milestones are overcome in the full course of the project development, the penalties paid will be adjusted, two people aware of the development said.

Supriya Sule, NCP leader Ajit Pawar on Friday said that just by giving speeches and winning awards as the best parliamentarian does not get the job done in politics. Ajit took on Sule saying she has not done any work in her constituency while alluding that she has lost touch with her constituency. «We can't just elect people in Parliament who don't do any work; just giving speeches in Parliament does not solve issues. If I don't come here (Baramati) and just give a speech in Mumbai and get the award for the best parliamentarian and don't oversee the work here, then would the work be done here,» asked Ajit Pawar. While Ajit did not name Sule by name, the indirect attack was aimed at Sule as the latter has been awarded 'the best Parliamentarian award' several times.
