Karnataka to present ground realities to Cauvery authorities before approaching SC: DCM Shivakumar
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Friday said the state government has decided to present the ground realities before the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) before going to the Supreme Court on the issue of releasing Cauvery river water to neighbouring Tamil Nadu. Karnataka will appeal to the twin bodies to visit the state and assess the ground realities, he said. The state will also press for construction of the Mekedatu balancing reservoir, by highlighting it as the only solution for the water dispute between the two states during the times of rainfall distress, he added. As the lack of rains in the Cauvery basin has led to water scarcity, Shivakumar said the situation is grim and expressed hope that Tamil Nadu will show a «soft corner» to Karnataka in allowing it to use at least the water needed for drinking purposes. «Our latest request is — CWMA has asked us to release 5,000 cusecs.

Why real estate industry needs to look inwards into its business processes
As Helmut Maucher, former chairman of Nestle, said in his book Leadership in Action, “It is imperative that the actual situation of a company, its products, and its mode of operating, correspond to the information being disseminated.” This is the most profound learning that continues to guide the business leadership; aligning marketing communication with the brand’s essence and the brand experience. However, something so simple is so rare to find speaking of the real estate industry.

New moms at higher risk of stroke after conceiving via fertility treatment, says new study
Women who became pregnant after infertility treatment were more likely to have a stroke in the year following the birth when compared with women who conceived naturally, scientists reported Wednesday in the largest study of its kind.Stroke risk was elevated in the first 30 days after delivery among the women who had undergone treatments, and the odds continued to rise through the year after childbirth. But the absolute numbers remained very low, the researchers emphasized: just 37 stroke hospitalizations for every 100,000 women who underwent treatment. There is no need for alarm, the lead author said in an interview. But women seeking treatment should be made aware of a possible link.

What’s driving Bharat to invest in alternative assets? Anshu Kapoor answers
Anshu Kapoor, President & Head, Nuvama Asset Management, says there are two drivers. The number one driver itself is the humongous pool of savings now available to the markets today. So, Indians save about $750 billion a year, that is Rs 60 lakh crore every year. A part of that savings obviously gets channelized into equity markets and other risky assets as we call them. But as wealth increases, demand for alternative avenues also increases and customers are asking why cannot we also access the next best unlisted companies of India? Why can’t we access commercial real estate or infrastructure assets? Emerging or evolving awareness about these products and asset classes is a big driver.”We have been seeing good flows in PMS and mutual funds from tier II, tier III cities and towns. But now we are seeing equally high interest in alternatives as well. What is driving this much more renewed awareness of investors from tier II, tier III cities and towns vis-a-vis financial assets? It is an interesting development that all of us are taking note of and I must say that the whole asset management industry is in a structural bull run.

About to abandon a job offer? Consider this first
Stella Thomas, Head of Talent Acquisition, Tally Solutions, a leading business software provider, says it is important to understand the nuances involved in taking such a complicated decision. First of all, there are two sides to the story. On one hand, companies face a huge challenge if people do not join, especially at the last moment, and they have to restart the hiring process. Thomas says that it is unprofessional to decline an offer after accepting it, and it can affect the candidate’s personal brand to some extent. Furthermore, the organisation concerned may not have a positive orientation towards such candidates when they reply later to the company. She says, “We do witness multiple instances of candidates declining an already accepted offer. In the recruitment world, this nomenclature is termed as renege. Recently, we experienced a similar situation with one of our tech hires. The candidate declined the offer on the day of joining. Any previous experiences do not prepare the talent acquisition team to deal with such situations.” While talking about the difficulties faced by employers, she explains that one of the challenges a product company of their size faces is that there is a provision to roll out only one offer per requisition. Hence, it is necessary to have a continuous flow of pipelines ready to mitigate such challenges.

Subhash Chandra’s Essel Group is in talks with corporate houses, real estate developers, and leading private equity players for the sale of marquee land properties and a few unlisted infrastructure assets to generate ₹1,500 crore that he is supposed to pay American PE firm JC Flowers to settle his debt obligations and take back control of assets including direct-to-home (DTH) company Dish TV, said multiple banking and ibanking sources aware of the talks. “The group has enough as sets to liquidate, pay off the settlement amount, get back whatever securities are pledged, and get free Dish TV and Zee Learn from JC Flowers. Dish TV's 24% stake would be valued around ₹800-900 crore,” said a banker.

Vote on Space Mantra's Future Retail bid likely soon
Future Retail (FRL) have put to vote the sole plan to take over the company by Space Mantra, promoted by former NBCC chairman Anoop Kumar Mittal, even as they are uncomfortable with the poor offer for what was once a leader in India's retail market. On Thursday, the committee of creditors (CoC) extended the timeline for voting to September 7 from August 31 as some lenders wanted more time to get internal approvals from their top management. Lenders are closely weighing their options with some preferring liquidation of the company rather than assigning the debt for next to nothing. «The offer is very close to the liquidation value and some lenders are uncomfortable with selling it so cheap but our choices are limited.
