Election Commission of India (ECI) Order, granting a paid holiday to employees on the day of polling in the NCT of Delhi under Section 135B of the RP Act 1951. India have demanded additional duty payments from about 45 major rice exporters due to imposition of 20% export duty, potentially disrupting future rice shipments from the country. The department has issued notices to these exporters for the September 2022 to January 30, 2023 period, and the tax demand could be about Rs 2,000 crore, said people aware of the development. Some port authorities are also asking rice exporters to pay customs duty before clearing shipments, the people said. ET has seen some of the notices. Several members of the All India Rice Exporters Association (AIREA) separately confirmed the notices. The association is likely to convey the exporters' grievances to the government before seeking legal remedy.

K Kavitha had allegedly «threatened» Aurobindo Pharma Promoter Sharath Chandra Reddy to pay Rs 25 crore to the Aam Aadmi Party for five retail zones allotted to his firm under the Delhi government's excise policy, the CBI told Special Court on Friday, while seeking her custody. Kavitha had told Reddy that in case of non-payment of money his business will be harmed in Telangana and Delhi under the Excise policy, the CBI has alleged. Reddy, who was an accused under the PMLA case probed by the Enforcement Directorate, had turned an approver in the case. He has not been charged sheeted by the CBI yet. Seeking custodial interrogation of Kavitha, the CBI told Special Judge Kaveri Baweja that it was on the «insistence and assurance» of Kavitha, daughter of former Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, that Reddy participated in the liquor business in the national capital.

Another tender was called for buying stainless steel sheets and plates in February 2024 which was also awarded at the same time. Public sector undertaking Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has bagged the lion's share in both tenders. SAIL will be supplying 1.05 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of steel worth ₹671.27 crore and another 16,356 MT of stainless steel worth ₹217.90 crore.

The review panel stressed on the timely dissemination of essential information, education, and communication (ICE) material for awareness of the heat waves, especially in regional languages through all platforms such as television, radio and social media.

Modi Thursday reviewed the preparedness for heat wave conditions and called for all arms of governments at central, state and district levels to work in synergy. An official statement said Modi chaired a meeting where he was briefed about the likelihood of above-normal maximum temperatures over most parts of the country during April-June, with high probability of such condition in central western peninsular India. Preparedness in the health sector was reviewed in terms of availability of essential medicines, intravenous fluids, ice packs, ORS and drinking water, the statement said. The timely dissemination of essential information, education and communication (IEC) awareness material, especially in regional languages, through all platforms such as television, radio and social media was stressed upon at the meeting, it said.

While the entry of the likes of Tesla and VinFast will help expand the market and accelerate EV adoption in India, Mercedes-Benz is confident to maintain leadership in the luxury EV space as the new entrants would play in the lower segment. «I think new competitions and new players are always welcome. It helps to expand the market, spread more awareness, which is also the need of the hour to get more EV penetration,» Mercedes-Benz India Managing Director & CEO Santosh Iyer told PTI. He was responding to a query on the implications of India's new EV policy and if it puts manufacturers which have already invested in the country at a disadvantage.

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) has junked its proposal to hike the guaranteed surrender value (GSV) for policyholders. Had this proposal, unveiled in December, been implemented, it would have increased the GSV of non-participating life insurance plans by 74-85%, as per some estimates. Non-participating plans are those in which maturity benefits are guaranteed and are not linked to the profits that insurers earn.

PhonePe on Wednesday said it has partnered with Nepal's digital wallet service eSewa and the Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN) Pokhara to promote digital payments through UPI on the Himalayan country's payment processor Fonepay Network. The partnership is a part of the Fewa New Year Festival which will be held from April 11-14 in Nepal. Over 3,000 merchants will participate in the festival with more than 1,00,000 visitors expected to visit.
