RBI’s warning on exuberant retail lending has deeper dimensions
retail lending is increasingly posing concerns for the banking industry, arising from a potential systemic risk. The non-mortgage lending growth of banks and NBFCs has been growing at 25-30% YoY, mainly led by credit cards, durables, autos, personal loans, education loans, and others. A recent RBI research delves into the empirics of retail credit growth and concludes that the quality of retail loan portfolio is healthy across banks, product categories, and borrower risk classes, even as growth continues to surge. But it warns that some subcategories, mainly credit cards and vehicle loan portfolios, show signs of weakness, and need close monitoring. The broader message of this study is that there are incipient concerns about rising credit risks from rampant retail lending by banks and NBFCs. However, the fact that the RBI’s research recommends further regulatory tightening to contain the spillover effect aligns with our fervent alerts on exuberant retail lending. Considering RBI’s latest study, the announced and prospective regulatory tightening, and our assessment of the economic cycle, the headwinds for the Indian banks and lending industry will likely intensify.

Dubai COP28 last month, 'Whether you like it or not, fossil fuel phase-out is inevitable.' In this context, questions like whether high-end Indian consumers really care for environmental impact, whether they are willing to pay a premium for sustainable products, and whether companies focus on ESG just because it's a mandate from shareholders and board are gaining traction. The real motivation for both companies and consumers is to save our planet for our children, and ensure we hand over a cleaner and greener environment for them to grow in. Today's challenges related to climate change, resource depletion and carbon footprint are very real.

View: From Europe to the Pacific, world weighs mounting risk of war
NATO defence chiefs' meeting drew to a close, NATO Military Committee Chairman Admiral Robert Bauer outlined the steps he believed households within the alliance should already be taking in the event of war. «You need to have water, you need to have a radio on batteries and you need to have a flashlight on batteries to make sure that you can survive the first 36 hours,» he said, adding that in any major conflict member nations might need to introduce conscription to keep their militaries in the fight. The shifting «tectonic plates of power», he warned, were producing the most dangerous world in decades – and risks that could only be tackled by the private sector, industry and governments together to deliver greater resilience. «We need public and private actors to change their mindset from an era in which everything was plannable, foreseeable, controllable, focused on efficiency… to an era in which anything can happen at any time,» Bauer said. «An era in which we need to expect the unexpected.» Alongside what now appears to be an ongoing U.S.-UK military campaign in Yemen, the first weeks of 2024 have brought a much greater focus on the mounting risk of war in both Europe and the Pacific – as well as an awareness that the U.S.

Carbon tax is a thorn. But that won't hold up free trade talks
NEW DELHI, MUMBAI : India’s free trade talks with the UK and European Union (EU) may skip the vexed carbon tax matter in an attempt to fast-track the trade deals, three people aware of the matter said. The absence of any agreement on the carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) casts a cloud over Indian steel exports to the region, as it would raise the cost of exports and eat into profits. India is negotiating separate free trade agreements (FTAs) with the UK and EU.
