The mutual-fund giant’s take on the classic, “safe" mix of 60% stocks and 40% bonds, which peaked in 2021, clawed back its losses by this February. But the fact that Vanguard felt the need to talk some customers off the ledge shows how poorly understood the approach is.

Bengaluru water tariff: Karnataka Deputy CM says citizens are ungrateful, hike is inevitable despite protests
DK Shivakumar has announced plans to increase water tariffs, despite significant public opposition. Addressing the concerns, Shivakumar criticized citizens, labeling them as ungrateful and emphasizing the need for the tariff hike to ensure the survival of the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). «Citizens are ungrateful. If they don't get water, they will abuse us, call us, and put messages on WhatsApp. They don't know how difficult it is,» said Shivakumar. «Let the media and opposition abuse us. I am bound to increase the water tariff. They can criticize or protest, I won't stop. We will increase the tariff; otherwise, BWSSB won't survive.»

Nikah without a qazi! Assam approves new law for mandatory registration of Muslim marriages, divorces
Assam cabinet approved the Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriage and Divorce Bill, 2024, mandating Muslims to register marriages and divorces with the government. This will eliminate the role of “qazis” in this process, and aims to curb child marriages. The proposed law will be presented in the legislative assembly during the autumn session beginning Thursday. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared on social media platform X, «Today the Assam Cabinet has approved the Muslim Marriage Registration Bill 2024. It has two special provisions: Now the registration of Muslim marriages will be done by the government and not by the Qazi” and “registration of child marriage shall be deemed illegal.» District commissioners and registrars will be responsible for keeping the registration records, which are currently held by 94 qazis authorized under a British-era law from 1935. The new bill intends to prevent the registration of marriages involving minors, something that was previously handled by the qazis.

Also read: Wall Street today: US stocks mixed, Fed minutes & Jackson Hole in focus We calculate that ATI has so far reduced coupon issuance by more than $800 billion, delivering a degree of stimulus similar to that of a 100-basis-point reduction in the Fed’s policy rate. Put another way, the Treasury has effectively offset all the Fed’s 2023 interest-rate hikes. Not only that, but the ATI has been supplemented with forward guidance, indicating that it will persist for another few quarters, to the other side of this year’s US election.
