TN amends Prohibition Act to enhance term, fine to eradicate illicit liquor menace
Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act, 1937, to substantially enhance the punishment term and quantum of fine for offences like manufacture, possession and selling of illicit liquor that endangers lives. The Tamil Nadu Prohibition (Amendment) Act, 2024, which shall come into force on such date as notified by the government, aims to completely eradicate the menace of illicit liquor from the state. The amendment, coming in the wake of Kallakurichi hooch tragedy, substantially enhances the term of imprisonment and quantum of fine for various offences under sections 4,5,6,7 and 11 of the Act.

Unanimous assembly resolution by Tamil Nadu to scrap NEET
Tamil Nadu assembly on Friday unanimously passed a resolution against the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test and urged the Union government to scrap the test. The resolution called for state governments to be allowed to undertake medical admissions based on class 12 marks, as was done before NEET was introduced. The resolution was introduced by chief minister MK Stalin. The resolution was passed with support from legislators from the ruling alliance parties, including MMK, DMDK, TVK and the CPI(M), as well as PMK, amid a boycott by BJP. The resolution also nudged the Union government to approve a bill passed by the House in 2022 seeking exemption from NEET for students from the state. Abolition of NEET has also been one of MK Stalin's and the DMK's election promises.

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday said he was forced to step in the Well of the House as Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar did not allow him an opportunity to speak even as he raised his hand for a long time. Blaming the Rajya Sabha Chairman for the incident, Kharge said that he went to the Well to get his attention. The remarks came as in a rare occurrence, Kharge, the Congress president, stepped in the Well of the House along with other opposition MPs as they were demanding a discussion on the NEET issue. Kharge told reporters outside the Parliament that he raised his hand for a long time and waited for the Chairman to notice him, but his focus was on the treasury benches.

Embassy in constant touch with Indian nationals in Lebanon, advisory issued for abundant precaution: MEA
Lebanon, the Ministry of External Affairs on Friday said the Embassy of India in Beirut is in «constant touch» with the Indian nationals there and added an advisory has been issued for them as a matter of «abundant precaution». MEA official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, in response to a query during a weekly media briefing here, said the advisory is not a «not a travel advisory» restricting the Indians to travel to Beirut. Some reports had claimed that India has issued a travel advisory for its nationals. «Our embassy in Beirut has issued an advisory. A lot of Indian nationals stay there, work there… there are professionals. As per the information that I have, about 2,000-3,000 people are there. Our embassy is in constant touch with them. We have not issued any travel advisory. We have just said that they should keep in touch with the embassy, so that if there is any incident, we can take action as soon as possible,» he said.

Aggregate WMA limit of states/UTs revised upward to Rs 60,118 cr: RBI
Reserve Bank of India on Friday upwardly revised the aggregate Ways and Means Advances (WMA) limit of state governments and Union Territories to Rs 60,118 crore effective July 1, 2024. The existing limit is Rs 47,010 crore. The WMA are temporary advances given by the RBI to the central, state governments and UTs to tide over any mismatch in receipts and payments. The limits have been revised based on the recommendations made by the group constituted by the central bank, consisting of select state finance secretaries to take account of the expenditure data of states for recent years.

States plan to sell bonds worth Rs 2.64 lakh crore in Jul-Sep, says RBI
plan to raise funds worth Rs 2.64 lakh crore through bond sales in July-September, while the Centre aims to raise Rs 2.60 lakh crore through the sale of Treasury Bills in the second quarter, the Reserve Bank of India said. In an indicative calendar released by the RBI on Friday, the central bank announced 13 sets of auctions in July-September through which states plan to sell bonds and raise funds.

Man arrested in Rs 10,000 cr GST fraud case after nine months on the run
GST fraud orchestrated across the country. Babar Khan, police said, allegedly floated fake firms based on stolen or forged ID cards to fraudulently avail input tax credit. On June 1 last year, Noida police claimed to have busted a gang suspected of orchestrating the GST fraud. The operation involved registering thousands of companies under stolen or fake identities and utilising these firms to generate e-way bills and obtain input tax credit from the govt. With the arrest of Khan, 47 people have been picked up in connection with the scam. They include residents of Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Sirsa, Jaipur, Chhindwara and so on.
