Exit polls loss-making venture: Axis My India chief
Exit polls is a loss-making business and the only profit a pollster earns is visibility, Axis My India chief Pradeep Gupta has said. Gupta was considered to be the poster boy of exit polls till June 4, when the Lok Sabha poll results dealt a hammer blow to the reputation of pollsters after their predictions proved to be wide off the mark. «Exit polls are a loss-making venture because no media house will pay as much money as that invested on the ground… the only profit that we make in exit polls is that we get visibility which we do not get while doing market research for corporate clients,» he said. In an interaction with PTI editors at the agency's headquarters, Gupta said 70 per cent of his clientele is corporate clients and that is where the main revenue comes from.

After Republican Governor Jeff Landry signed the concerned bill Tuesday, Louisiana became the first state to punish a pedophile with castration, reports the 'Associated Press'. The new law will come into effect on August 1, 2024. Defer implementation of new criminal laws: Jairam Ramesh
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Saturday demanded that the enforcement of the three criminal laws, which are to come into force from July 1, be deferred, saying the Bills were «bulldozed» through Parliament. In a post on X, Ramesh said the implementation of the Bills be deferred to enable a thorough review and re-examination by a reconstituted Standing Committee on Home Affairs as they were passed at a time when 146 MPs had been suspended. «On Dec 25 2023, the President of India had given her assent to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023,the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023. The three far-reaching Bills had been bulldozed through Parliament without proper debate and discussion, and at a time when 146 MPs had been suspended from the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha,» Ramesh said. «Earlier the Bills had been bulldozed through the Standing Committee on Home Affairs without detailed interactions with stakeholders across the country and completely ignoring the written and very detailed dissent notes of a number of MPs belonging to different political parties, including the Indian National Congress, who were members of the Standing Committee,» he said.

Citing overlaps, experts seek rejig of Digital Competition Bill
digital competition bill for the second day on Wednesday, where the participants flagged that placing or imposing foreign regulation approaches such as the «ex-ante law» would lead to the destruction of value and access to digital public goods and infrastructure. «We flagged the impact on startups and their funding. The overlap of the proposed regulation (digital competition bill) with existing laws and regulations such as the Information Technology Act of 2000 and the Information Technology Rules of 2021 were highlighted. There is a need for more consultation on the subject and the current draft needs to be revisited,» a think-tank executive who participated in the meeting, said.
