After Republican Governor Jeff Landry signed the concerned bill Tuesday, Louisiana became the first state to punish a pedophile with castration, reports the 'Associated Press'. The new law will come into effect on August 1, 2024. While the supporters of the new Louisiana law argue that it will deter people from committing sex crimes against children, its opponent counters it by calling it “cruel and unusual" punishment in violation of the U.S. Constitution.

However, it will depend on the discretion of the judge as now he will have the option to sentence someone to surgical castration. The new law will apply to certain aggravated sex crimes, including rape, incest and molestation against a child under the age of 13. The sentence is not automatic, it would vary from case to case.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, in some US states including Louisiana, California, Florida and Texas there is a law that allows chemical castration for those convicted of certain sex crimes. But in no other state, the judge can impose surgical castration outright.
