Air India bids adieu to 'your palace in the sky'
Air India has sold four of its last remaining Boeing 747-400 jumbo jetliners, marking the end of an era that had once thrust the airline to the global league. People familiar with the matter said the four aircraft have been sold to US company AerSale, a supplier of aftermarket commercial jet engines and parts. While two aircraft are likely to be converted to freighters, two will be disassembled for their parts, the people said. Vman Aviation Services, a Mumbai-based company, will manage the transfer of the planes to AerSale.

However, UK inflation is still higher than the BoE's two per cent but the direction of the downtrend is clear, said analysts. While UK has lifted rate cut hopes.

Incoming BoE deputy governor Lombardelli: Bernanke review offers a 'great opportunity' to improve policymaking
At a Treasury Committee hearing today (16 April), the chief economist of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development argued it was a «good thing» the BoE was open to the review process, particularly considering that «very large errors» have been seen across central banks in recent years, including the UK. This was due to the «nature» of the large economic shocks in recent years, she added, which made it difficult for «standard» economic models and forecasts to cope, which led to errors and an inability to provide «reliable estimates». As such, she argued models «can add...

Two Air India flights flew over Iran airspace a few hours before Israel attack
New York to Mumbai and from Mumbai to London, respectively, on April 13 and April 14 above the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman when the shadow of a conflict between Iran and Israel loomed large, showed data by Flightradar24, a website that tracks flights. Iran attacked Israel over the weekend, firing at least 300 drones and missiles. Iran’s military assault was expected for days after tensions between the two countries ratcheted up on April 1, when fighter jets struck a building that is part of the Iranian Embassy at Damascus in Syria.

Bernanke urges BOE to highlight alternative paths for economy and policy
The Bank of England will place more stress on developments that could upend its expectations for the U.K. economy and future interest rates as part of an overhaul of forecasting and communications recommended by Ben Bernanke, a former chair of the Federal Reserve. Published Friday, the Bernanke review is one of the first steps taken by a leading central bank to understand why it underestimated a surge in prices that began in early 2021 and dented living standards.

IMF managing director warns central banks to 'resist' calls for early rate cuts
Speaking at the Atlantic Council, Kristalina Georgieva said high inflation across advanced economies was «not fully defeated» and could require a longer wait before reducing borrowing costs. She said major economies have, generally, seen inflation trend downwards in recent months, which she expects to continue in 2024, «creating the conditions for major advanced economy central banks to begin cutting rates in the second half of the year». Invesco and Citigroup tout May BoE cut but central bank consensus eludes economists But she heeded that the «pace and timing of the monetary pivo...

Boeing finds executives got an extra $500,000 in perks from private jets
An internal Boeing review found that Chief Executive David Calhoun and other top executives took personal trips worth more than $500,000 on the company’s private jets and other planes that were improperly recorded as business travel. The review and correction, which Boeing disclosed in a securities filing, was prompted by a Wall Street Journal investigation last year into the executives’ use of the company’s fleet of private jets, people familiar with the matter said. Boeing’s review found that some flights by the executives in 2021 and 2022 “were not previously classified as perquisites by the company but should have been classified as such in accordance with SEC rules and guidance," the company said in its proxy filing April 5.

Ignoring the Boeing bits
Boeing has flown into rough weather again. CEO Dave Calhoun — brought in to revive the aerospace and defence giant in January 2020 from the tailspin of the two 737 Max 8 aircraft crashes in 2018 and 2019 — announced his planned December exit last month. The many pun-laced stories regarding the turbulence enveloping Boeing shouldn't distract from the bleak point that this is just another instance of a giant corporation betraying the trust of the public — and that, sadly, this won't be the last. As the findings of many investigations and committees conclude — even as the company faces fresh safety scrutiny after a Boeing engineer emerged this week alleging 'major flaws' in 777 and 787 Dreamliners — Boeing may have gotten away with shoddy design of the Max 8. The design was cleared by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), as per aircraft certification guidelines applicable at the time. This means no one did anything wrong intentionally. Lack of any criminal convictions thus far also appears to support this conclusion. Reduced oversight creates a swamp wherein the shady thrive, and even the scrupulous can lose their sense of ethics. Without oversight, even Atlas could be tempted to shrug and drop the heavens he bears on his shoulders.

Taapsee Pannu in no mood to share BTS pics of her wedding to beau Mathias Boe
Taapsee Pannu has finally confirmed her marriage to Danish badminton player Mathias Boe. In an interview with the Hindustan Times, the ‘Haseen Dilruba’ actress admitted that she tied the knot with Boe in Udaipur, but also maintained that she did not share pictures as she wanted the wedding to be a private affair. The ‘Dunki’ actress was asked if she planning to share candid pictures and behind-the-scenes of the event, to which she replied that she was not ready to expose her personal life and the people associated with it, to public scrutiny. “I just am not very sure if I want to let my personal life and the people involved in it, to go through the kind of scrutiny that happens when a public figure gets married. It’s me who has signed up for this, not my partner, not the people who were involved in the wedding. I am not sure about how I feel about it being out there, that’s why I’ve kept it to myself,” she told HT. “I have no plans for a release of any kind. In the future, if I get comfortable sharing about it (wedding details), we will figure out how, what, and when I want to release something if at all..” she added. The actress also clarified that she never intended to keep the wedding a secret. “The people who are genuinely close to me were a part of the celebration and always knew about my relationship and my intentions about when and how I want to get married,” she said.

Boeing hit with whistleblower allegations, adding to safety concerns
FAA) is investigating a Boeing whistleblower's claims that the company dismissed safety and quality concerns in the production of the planemaker's 787 and 777 jets, an agency spokesperson said on Tuesday. The planemaker has been grappling with a full-blown safety crisis that has undermined its reputation following a Jan. 5 mid-air panel blowout on a 737 MAX plane. It has undergone a management shakeup, U.S. regulators have put curbs on its production, and deliveries fell by half in March.

Boeing deliveries drop by half in March due to increased quality checks
Boeing said on Tuesday it had delivered 29 airplanes in March, down more than half from the 64 delivered in the same month a year ago, as 737 MAX production slipped on increased quality checks and audits by regulators. Boeing has said it is producing fewer MAX single-aisle jets to improve manufacturing quality after the Jan. 5 mid-air blowout of a door plug on a 737 MAX 9 jet brought the U.S. planemaker under increased scrutiny from regulators.
