Why it’s crucial to rebalance MF portfolios
WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY REBALANCING MUTUAL FUND PORTFOLIOS? Various asset classes move in different directions over a period of time. Due to this, asset allocation of an individual changes over a time. For example, due to a sharp rally in the price of gold by 35% in the last one year, investor allocation to gold would have increased. However, with the Nifty 50 moving up just 6-7% it could have lowered the overall allocation to equity in the portfolio. So you need to rebalance it to bring it back in line with the original. So an investor starting with 65% equity, 25% debt and 10% gold, needs to bring back this allocation at the end of the year, which is called rebalancing.

Global demand for explosives, ammunition leads to record defence exports
global demand for explosives and ammunition, fed by ongoing conflicts in Europe and West Asia, has resulted in record Indian defence exports, with the figure crossing ₹23,622 crore in 2024-25. Defence exports, which have been actively promoted by the government over the past decade, grew at over 12%, with strong demand for Indian manufactured explosives like TNT, RDX and HMX in the global market. Sources said that most Indian explosives and ammunition manufacturing capacity has been fully booked for the next three years, with at least five more plants coming up within the private sector in the coming months. State-owned defence public sector units have recorded a 42.8% surge in exports, reaching a high of ₹8,389 crore in the financial year.

BoB expects deposits to grow at 9-11%, loans to rise 11-13%: Debadatta Chand, CEO
Debadatta Chand had the proverbial baptism by fire as CEO at India’s second largest public sector lender, Bank of Baroda (BoB), hit by the controversy over the financier’s attachment notice on actor and MP Sunny Deol just a couple of months into the top job. Then came the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) curbs on its digital banking application, restrictions that took nearly seven months to be lifted. But after a trying first year, Chand has eased into the corner-room job, seeking consistency in the bank's business matrix and reducing the lender's dependency on costlier wholesale deposits. In a detailed interview with ET, Chand spoke about BoB’s current positioning and shared his outlook for what's traditionally known as a corporate-focused lender. Edited excerpts: You will complete two years at the helm in June. How has BoB shaped up in this time? The bank is doing extremely well. Fundamentally, it is a strong bank. For the past two years, the performance has been consistent, and the outlook is stable. Earlier we (had) talked about how to double the business in 5-6 years and how to maintain margin in a dynamic market scenario. The performance has been very satisfying. The balance sheet strategy is to not to be heavily dependent on the bulk deposit. Our RAM (retail, agriculture MSME) is going very strong. We decided to go slow on fine priced corporate loans. We are capturing market share in retail loans and deposits.

Everything you say to an Alexa speaker will be sent to Amazon
Amazon has disabled two key privacy features in its Alexa smart speakers, in a push to introduce artificial intelligence-powered «agentic capabilities» and turn a profit from the popular devices. Starting today (March 28), Alexa devices will send all audio recordings to the cloud for processing, and choosing not to save these recordings will disable personalisation features. How do voice assistants work? A voice assistant works by constantly listening for a «wake word», such as «Alexa». Once woken, it records the command that is spoken and matches it to an action, such as playing a music track. Matching a spoken command to an action requires what computer scientists call natural language understanding, which can take a lot of computer power.

Mere recital of poem, stand-up comedy can't lead to hatred: SC
Imran Pratapgarhi, a bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan said literature including poetry, dramas, films, stage shows including stand-up comedy, satire and art, made lives of human beings more meaningful. «Seventy-five years into our republic, we cannot be seen to be so shaky on our fundamentals that mere recital of a poem or for that matter, any form of art or entertainment, such as, stand-up comedy, can be alleged to lead to animosity or hatred amongst different communities,» the bench said. The court went on, «Subscribing to such a view would stifle all legitimate expressions of view in the public domain which is so fundamental to a free society.» The top court said this case showed even after 75 years of the existence of our Constitution, the law enforcement machinery of the state was either ignorant about this important fundamental right or did not care for it. Advocating free expression of thoughts by individuals, the top court said the effect of spoken or written words couldn't be judged on the basis of standards of the people who always had a sense of insecurity or those who always perceived criticism as a threat to their power or position.
