Phoenix Springs: A philosophical journey with clicks of a mouse
John Gray makes a bracing assertion in his book «Straw Dogs»: «Technology is not something that humankind can control. It is an event that has befallen the world. Once a technology enters human life-whether it be fire, the wheel, the automobile, radio, television or the internet-it changes it in ways we can never fully understand.» It's an observation brought to mind by the new point-and-click computer game Phoenix Springs, an eye-catching, thought-provoking exploration of the unintended consequences that follow a society-wide embrace of biohacking. Players fall into the role of Iris, a veteran reporter, as she sits on a train with a desert looming through a window. The opening seconds, and an arresting dissolve from the sun-flooded train to a shadowy apartment, sets the tone for what follows-a slippery exploration of memory, time and space grounded in Iris' quest to uncover the mystery of what happened to her brother.

Third Eye: Lady Justice and the debate, monitoring progress on PM projects & a left-handed compliment
Lady Justice and the Debate The new statue of 'Lady Justice' — without the traditional blindfold and holding a copy of the Constitution — unveiled by the Supreme Court this week generated much debate online and offline. However, a precedent had already been sent in the Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code report, featuring a similar version of Lady Justice, without a blindfold and holding law books instead of scales. Monitoring Progress on PM Projects Centre's Monitoring Group has been recast for NDA 3.0, this time under the chairmanship of agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The last such group, set up in 2019-2020, was headed by Mansukh Mandaviya and Jitendra Singh. The newly-set up group held its first meeting on Friday and on the agenda was progress on all announcements made by the PM, including budget announcements, projects for which foundation stone was laid by the PM besides expectations of all ministries/ departments.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi's brother, sister booked in cheating case
Bengaluru police have filed an FIR against Union Minister Pralhad Joshi's brother and sister based on a complaint of cheating lodged by a former JD(S) MLA's wife. His brother Gopal Joshi and sister Vijayalakshmi were booked by Basaweshwaranagar police. Gopal's son Ajay Joshi has also been named in the FIR, police sources said on Friday. The complaint was filed by Sunita Chavan, wife of former Nagthana MLA Devavand Phool Singh Chavan, who lost the 2023 Assembly election. She alleged that Gopal promised her to get a ticket to contest the May Lok Sabha elections when she approached him at his Hubballi residence in north Karnataka in March and later delivered Rs 25 lakh at Vijayalakshmi's house at Basaveshwaranagar here on his instruction.

Railway lowers time window for advanced booking of train tickets
Indian Railways has reduced the time window for advanced booking of seats in passenger trains. According to a circular issued by the Railway Board, time limit for Advance Reservations has been reduced from 120 to 60 days (excluding date of journey). This new diktat will be applicable from November 1 onwards so bookings can be made under the 120-day Advance Reservation Period (ARP) till then. Existing bookings under the earlier ARP will remain intact as well. This reverses a decision taken in March 2015 to increase the window of booking. There will be no change in the case of certain day time express trains like Taj Express, Gomti Express, among others where lower time limits for Advance Reservations are already in place. There will also be no change in the case of limit of 365 days for Foreign Tourists, the order said.
