Should PSUs be considered an essential part of portfolio? Vikas Khemani answers
Vikas Khemani, Founder, Carnelian Asset Management, says in the last 10 years, we have seen a remarkable shift in the accountability and governance and the execution of the PSEs and that has made many of these public sector enterprises very valuable. Banks are moving towards 16-17% ROE profiles. All public sector units in defence are doing very well with the new refound growth sector. All PSUs except probably oil and marketing, still have a bit of a struggle. That is also picking up, but whether it is gas or any other, the PSUs are being run reasonably well. While BSNL is still facing challenges, we have seen a remarkable shift happening in the railway operation.

When a ‘neutral umpire’ almost gave Lahore to India
India Independence Day: Partition of India, which marked the end of the British Raj, was a hasty, if not botched, affair, so it may sound strange to know Lord Mountbatten, who literally took Partition through, said he wanted an unified India. He said he tried everything to stop the partition. He even said that he regretted it but had no choice. Speaking to veteran journalist Kuldip Nayar, the last British Viceroy and Governor-General of India accepted that he could not «hold» the country and had to hasten the Independence process, leading to a massacre that killed nearly two million people. SC: Bail is rule, jail exception' applies even to UAPA offences
jail is an exception" legal principle is applicable even to offences under special statutes like the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday while granting bail to a man accused of harbouring suspected terrorists. A bench of justices Abhay Oka and Augustine George Masih said once a case has been made out for the grant of bail to an accused, the court cannot decline the relief. «When a case is made out for a grant of bail, the courts should not have any hesitation in granting bail. The allegations of the prosecution may be very serious. But, the duty of the courts is to consider the case for grant of bail in accordance with the law. 'Bail is the rule and jail is an exception' is a settled law,» SC said. The verdict came while ordering the release of a retired police constable Jalaluddin Khan, who was booked under the stringent provisions of the anti-terror law and those of the now defunct Indian Penal Code for renting out the upper floor of his house to alleged members of the banned Popular Front of India.
