The ‘we-brought-you-freedom’ story has an expiry date
Through the broken glass Of a library window The burning books Can’t be read. So new ones Will have to be written. —Ian McMillan (@IMcMillan) Over a decade ago, I walked into a small two-storeyed white house in Dhaka. It felt familiar. I’d grown up around houses like that in Kolkata with red oxide floors, black-and-white photographs on the wall, the rooms cool even on a warm afternoon.

Ferrari or Lamborghini, it's a luxury quite a few can afford
super luxury cars are set to surpass previous peaks for the third straight year in India, even as mainstream auto makers are struggling to clear their piled-up inventory by offering massive discounts. A Lamborghini booked now will be delivered only in 2026 or later, as the supercar maker has sold all units its Italian headquarters allocated for India. The company retails the Huracan, Urus and Revuelto in India, with the on-road price ranging from ₹5 crore to ₹10 crore. Ferrari, McLaren and Aston Martin are also seeing strong demand in India for their supercars. Mercedes-Benz and Audi have waiting periods stretching up to a year for their top end models such as the AMG G 63 and RS Q8, priced ₹2.5-4.55 crore on road.

Who says we don’t need FII money? Net monthly SIP flows not more than Rs 10K crore: Samir Arora
Samir Arora, Founder, Helios Capital, says we cannot let go of pockets of flow by just believing that we are getting Rs 20,000 crore a month. The SIP numbers are good, but they are not what you think are. The actual net flows are not Rs 20,000 crore or more per month, they are only Rs 10,000 crore. For some reason, we are only talking about gross flows. When things go bad, things will become very bad if we ignore one big pool of money and more than that, ignore valuations and ignore bad news beyond a point. So one has to balance it. We have done it. I am sure fund managers are doing it. Everybody is saying valuations are expensive, and the markets are due for a correction but look at the ability of the market to shrug off bad news, what it did on election day, the Budget day, and what it has done post that black Monday 10 days ago. Samir Arora: Correct. One of course is flows, but it would look out of place if we were doing it independent of the world. So, basically, the mothership which is the US is also doing the same, not related to the budget or elections, but in general reacting to any bad phases and so it has recovered so well, Japan has recovered. But the FII flows have been quite negative and I think that is because these tax hikes have become untenable. Just to give you one number, the MSCI India Index in dollar terms is up over 17 percent year to date, whereas a $10 billion index is up 13%. So, over time, this is going to hurt and there will be some loss of FII investments in India.

It recorded revenues of ₹497 crore in the fiscal year ending March 2023, while its Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) grew to ₹2520 crore in the same period, a number that has increased 3X in the current fiscal year as per valuation reports. A few features set Rapido apart—it runs on a subscription model for its driver partners or “captains" instead of the more prevalent commission model, where the platform takes a commission on each ride.

Subsidies for goods movement via inland waterways in works
inland waterways, as part of its efforts to promote greater use of the country's network of rivers, canals and backwaters to move cargo, officials in the know said. The government is readying a scheme to incentivise parcel movement on the Ganga, Brahmaputra and Barak rivers in the first phase. A discount of up to 35% on the invoice value for transporting goods is expected to be offered by a subsidiary of state-run Shipping Corporation of India, with the government reimbursing the company for the loss of revenue, they said. «This scheme has been designed after feedback from stakeholders that recently used national waterways 1, 2 and 16 to transport goods,» one of the officials said. The incentive will make waterway movement on those routes comparable to road transport, he added.
