Union Budget: Will Budget 2024 book tourism’s ticket to growth?
Union Budget 2024: In the 2024 interim Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman allocated ₹2,449.62 crore to the tourism sector, signaling a substantial 44.7% increase from the revised allocation in the current fiscal year. This marked a significant improvement over the 2023 Union Budget, initially set at ₹2,400 crore for the tourism ministry and later revised downward to ₹1,692.10 crore. With the industry experiencing a surge in travel, the upcoming Budget announcements later this month are eagerly awaited by stakeholders in the tourism sector. Hotel operators, who significantly downsised their workforce during the Covid-19 pandemic, are now actively hiring to support expansive growth plans and address high turnover rates in India. Over the next 12-18 months, an estimated 200,000 jobs are anticipated to be generated in the hotel, restaurant, and tourism sectors, as per TeamLease Services, a staffing services firm. This surge in employment comes as hotels expand their capacities, open new locations, and experience robust demand from both business and leisure travelers.

Piramal Capital raises $100-million social loan
Piramal Capital & Housing Finance raised its maiden dollar syndicated social loan of $100 million (₹835 crore). The entire loan is pre-funded by Standard Chartered Bank and the foreign lender is expected to syndicate the loan in the next few months. The loan has a three-year maturity, and it is benchmarked to the three-month secured overnight financing rate (SOFR) plus 200 basis points. The prevailing SOFR is 5.3%. «Through this loan, we are trying to tap the overseas market and since a large part of our financing gels well with the social theme, this loan is the first of many to come,» a Standard Chartered Bank official said on condition of anonymity. «All highly-rated NBFCs have to start looking at some amount of financing from the international markets and this route is expected to pick up pace. In fact, there is a lot of global investor appetite for ESG space.»

Supernova insolvency case: NCLAT to wait for lenders' decision on settlement offer from Supertech Realtors
NCLAT on Wednesday said it will wait for the decision of lenders on a revised settlement offer by Supertech Realtors, which is developing a residential apartment, offices, retail and luxury hotels at its Supernova project. NCLAT also directed the Interim Resolution Professional (IRP) not to constitute a Committee of Creditors. However, it said the construction work for the project would be continued under the supervision of IRP. A three-member NCLAT bench observed that Supertech Realtors submitted an one-time settlement (OTS), and the lead bank principally agreed with the proposal and the proposal is under consideration by the consortium of banks. «In the meantime, we direct that the Committee of Creditors be not constituted. However, the ongoing project may be continued under the supervision of the IRP and the IRP shall extend all cooperation by the Corporate Debtor, its officers and employees in carrying out the construction,» said the 8-page NCLAT order.

Construction companies likely to report subdued growth in Q1 amid lower awarding of projects, slow execution
construction companies in the June 2024 quarter is expected to remain muted due to delay in obtaining clearances related to acquisition of land parcels, severe heat wave across various parts of the country, and slack in construction activities amid the general elections held during the quarter. Revenue of these companies is expected to grow by 2-7% year-on-year while net profit may increase by 3-10%. In the year-ago quarter, these companies had reported a strong profit growth of 33-53% while revenue had grown by 2-33%. In FY24, revenue and profit had increased in the range of 9-34% and 9-69% respectively. According to the data shared by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the construction of national highways fell by 12% year-on-year to 1,288 km in the first two months of FY25. This fall was largely because of weak awarding of projects. Historically it has been observed that the awarding of road projects slows down when there are general elections in a fiscal. A weak order flow coupled with a slow pace of project execution will culminate into muted revenue and profit growth for the sector.
