Today, people looking at a career in the world of data have a common question: how do you differentiate between a data scientist and a data analyst? The skills for both are similar, says Simplilearn, an online learning platform. While the role of a data analyst has been around for longer, data science started when the data boom led to the use of new technologies to manage, interpret and analyse such large data sets to make better decisions, according to Simplilearn. The work involves understanding business problems, looking at various sources of data to assess patterns, finding the best way to look at insights and then distilling them for outcomes. The learning platform says data scientists are primarily problem solvers. The kind of tools they need to work on are vast — Tableau, Python, Hive, Impala, PySpark, Excel, Hadoop, etc — to develop and test new algorithms. Data scientists look at both structured and unstructured data, and build AI and machine learning models. Meanwhile, the responsibilities for data analysts range from gathering data across databases, building complex queries using SQL and other tools, spotting trends and creating reports.

Skilling programmes cannot have only supply-focused training mechanisms. Whether one gets skilled through formal college education or through vocational skilling programmes or through professional certificates, these programmes need to anticipate industry-based jobs demand and accordingly plan the required skilling. The actions to implement this are required at multiple levels. Some of the methods needed include public-private partnerships. Recently, the Ministry of Education and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) signed eight memoranda of understanding (MOUs) to address this gap. One of the MOUs was with IBM. This covered skilling at the school level, higher education level and through vocational avenues. In higher education, the plan through this partnership is to work with the Department of Higher Education, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT), National Institute of Technical Teachers’ Training & Research (NITTTR), Chandigarh, and state skilling missions. The students are expected to be given access to digital content, experiential learning, and new skills for technical careers.

And the single biggest answer to such questions is building on their skills. A recent report by Emeritus on global workplace skills, based on insights from 6,000+ professionals across multiple countries, found that tech-driven skill gaps were becoming a global issue. About 1,720 Indian professionals participated in this survey. As many as 53% of those surveyed feared becoming redundant if they did not continue to develop skills; 50% said they did not have the right skills for career advancement. A critical learning is that this need is being today felt across many career stages, and not just at the early levels. Upskilling on tech-driven skill gaps is becoming a requirement for the mid-career professional and for the senior executive.
