2024 Oscar Awards: Jimmy Kimmel takes a dig at Robert Downey and Robert De Niro, ridicules Bradley Cooper too
Academy Awards ceremony at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on March 10, Jimmy Kimmel mocked Robert Downey and made an awkward quip about his drug addiction. As the camera panned to the 'Oppenheimer' star, Kimmel said, «This is the highest point of Robert Downey Jr.’s long and illustrious career — well, one of the highest points.» After Downey Jr. tapped on his nose twice, Kimmel said, «Too on the nose? Or is that a drug motion you made?» Robert Downey, who was nominated for his role as Lewis Strauss in the Best Supporting Actor category at this year’s Academy Awards, made a rolling motion with his hands to push Kimmel to keep the monologue moving.

Job market signalling: What it is, how to apply it to stand out in the job market
education’. The real question is why an employer hires an economics graduate in product design, or a civil engineer in marketing. Michael Spence received the Nobel prize for his Harvard thesis, where he proposed the idea of job market signalling, a foundational concept in labour economics. Here’s how to understand the way employers read signals, and apply this to stand out. Education Individuals acquire credentials or education not necessarily because it will help them contribute directly to work productivity, but because these signal a higher ability to potential employers and help land better jobs. Most valuable education courses have either entry or exit barriers. So, tough entrance exams like JEE, NEET and CAT are a high entry barrier to top institutes, and clearing chartered accountancy exams is a high exit barrier. The tougher the course, the stronger the signal for the job market, and better returns in compensation. A clear hierarchy plays out in course and college selection. It’s no surprise that, on an average, STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) degrees from institutes that are tough to get into, signal higher capability and result in above-average salaries. Use this idea to conduct a cost-benefit analysis of academic qualifications that you choose to pursue.

Mike Tyson to fight Jake Paul in match on Netflix on July 20
Mike Tyson will be getting back in the boxing ring. Nicknamed ‘Iron Mike’, the former world heavyweight champion, whose career was marred by issues in and out of the ring, will take on social media influencer turned boxer Jake Paul on July 20 in a match that will be streamed live on Netflix, the company announced last week. The bout, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, will be the first fight for Tyson since 2020, when he and Roy Jones Jr., also a former world boxing champion, fought to a draw in an exhibition match. The event will be another step in Netflix’s aggressive push into live “sports-adjacent programming,” which has the potential to draw large audiences without the kind of investment that streaming games from professional sports leagues requires. The company recently reached a multibillion-dollar, 10-year deal for the exclusive rights to stream World Wrestling Entertainment’s flagship weekly wrestling show, “Raw.” The made-for-streaming boxing spectacle was brought about through a partnership between Netflix and Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions, the company he established in 2021 with Nakisa Bidarian to disrupt combat sports. He and Tyson will be paid about the same for the fight, but the parties would not reveal the amount. Paul, 27, began boxing in 2018 and has seen his star rise on his way to a 9-1 record.

We have a strong attack, need to make our defence better: Badminton stars Stawik-Chirag
Pullela Gopichand is to be believed, they are India’s best bet for a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. “If they play one notch below their best, even then they should win the gold. They are that good,” the badminton national head coach said about the Indian men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who are in red hot form and have yet again proved it at the French Open Super 750 in Paris. The duo talks with BORIA MAJUMDAR about the importance of the ongoing tournament, how it will help them prepare for the Olympics, their chances and more. Excerpts: How much does it help that the ongoing tournament is at the venue that will be used for the Olympics? Chirag: It will help a lot. You get yourself familiar with things and given that we haven’t played in this venue, it is of serious help because we will now know what to expect come the Olympics. It is always about preparation and to be well prepared we need to know as much of what we might encounter as possible. Playing this tournament in the same venue is the kind of perfect preparation we need. The more you win, the more pressure it will bring during the Olympics. You have started the year in a stellar fashion. Multiple semi-finals and finals already.
