Bharti Airtel has said that the full-scale impact of its deployment of fixed wireless access (FWA) services, which has been deployed across 25 cities so far, will start to show in the second quarter of the current fiscal year which started in April. Airtel’s FWA deployment will happen over standalone architecture (SA), similar to larger rival Reliance Jio, unlike its cellular 5G deployment which happened over non-standalone architecture (NSA), managing director Gopal Vittal said during its recent earnings call. Fixed wireless access (FWA) is being seen as the crucial first use case in 5G that will enable telcos like Airtel and Jio to monetise the huge investments made on deployment of the technology, amidst telcos offering unlimited 5G speeds to mobile phone users.

Kolkata street last month, commuters sought refuge inside a glass-walled bus shelter where two air conditioners churned around stifling air. Those inside were visibly sweating, dabbing at their foreheads in sauna-like temperatures that were scarcely cooler than out in the open. Local authorities initially had plans to install as many as 300 of the cooled cabins under efforts to improve protections from a heat season that typically runs from April until the monsoon hits the subcontinent in June. There are currently only a handful in operation, and some have been stripped of their AC units, leaving any users sweltering. “It doesn’t work,” Firhad Hakim, mayor of the city of 15 million in India’s eastern state of West Bengal, said on a searing afternoon when temperatures topped 40C. “You feel suffocated.”

Mumbai once had the dubious distinction of being Asia's largest slum. Then, an embarrassed Mumbai Municipal Corporation claimed Orangi in the Pakistani port city of Karachi has inherited that rather ignominious moniker. However, Dharavi still is home to a very large number of people — more than half a million — jostling for meagre resources on a relatively tiny patch of land — of about 550 acres. And, the area remains central to the outcome of the parliamentary polls in the Mumbai South Central seat. Dharavi is populated largely with 50 to 70 square foot homes, interspersed with leather and plastic recycling and pottery and other small-scale units. Successive state governments for several decades have been promising to redevelop Dharavi, which is part of the Mumbai south central constituency.
