FIVE Citizens Progressive Fallout Experts country strain Why both India & Canada stand to lose from this dispute
India's image as a democratic country committed to rules-based order could take a hit, according to an expert. A diplomatic row erupted between India and Canada earlier this week following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations of «potential» involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen, in British Columbia on June 18. India has rejected the allegations as «absurd» and «motivated» and expelled a senior Canadian diplomat in a tit-for-tat move to Ottawa's expulsion of an Indian official over the case. In a blog posted by the Wilson Institute on Friday, Canada Institute Associate Xavier Delgado said, «Trade will likely be the first major casualty of the fallout, with negotiations for the EPTA (Early Progress Trade Agreement) being put on hold.» «Both countries declared that they would pause trade talks with each other earlier this month and Canadian Trade Minister Mary Ng has indefinitely postponed a trade mission to New Delhi that had been planned for October,» he wrote. The negotiations were a notable part of Canada's Indo-Pacific Strategy, which listed the EPTA as a critical step towards a larger comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) that would bolster trade ties between the two countries, he said. The stalled trade talks have put a $17 billion bilateral trade relationship under strain.

Pirola variant. This variant, also referred to as BA.2.86 and has been linked to at least 37 new cases in England, as reported by The Independent on September 17. Fortunately, these cases have led to a total of seven hospitalizations but, fortunately, no fatalities, according to the news outlet. The UKHSA has noted that 28 of these cases were identified as part of an investigation into an outbreak within a care home in the eastern part of the country. As Pirola, the new mutation of Omicron strain of Covid-19, worries health experts, the UK's National Health Service (NHS) has asked senior citizens above age 65 to immediately get their top-up booster jabs. People aged 65 and over in England are being urged to get a top-up booster vaccine against Covid at a time when more people are coming into hospitals with the highly-mutated BA.2.86 virus, reports the BBC. The vaccines will soon be provided for free to more vulnerable groups. «Hundreds of thousands of adults who are eligible for winter vaccines — including all aged 65 and over, pregnant women and those with an underlying health condition — will also begin receiving invitations from the NHS to encourage them to get their Covid and flu jabs from this week,» NHS said in a statement late on Monday. According to the report, Covid hospital admissions are now at the highest rate since the end of April, at 4.6 per 100,000 people. That is still below the level reached last winter. The hospital admission rates remain highest among people aged 85 and over, followed by 75 to 84-year-olds.
