Under most presidents, such a directive might have been largely symbolic. After all, 32 states already have English as their official language. But Trump isn’t most presidents. He has demonized immigrants for more than a decade, making them the scapegoats for nearly every societal ill. In his first term he complained that too many of them came from “[expletive] countries.” At a campaign event last March, he decried those who speak languages “that nobody in this country has ever heard of. It’s a very horrible thing.” In his address to Congress this week, he touted his new executive order and accused legal immigration of resulting in “beautiful towns destroyed.”

The size of the 2025-26 budget is expected to reach Rs 4 lakh crore, an increase from the Rs 3.71 lakh crore allocated in the current fiscal year. DCB Bank has once again cut its fixed deposit (FD) interest rates for deposits less than Rs 3 crore, marking the second such reduction within a month. The bank has reduced up to 25 basis points on select tenures. The highest FD interest rate has been cut from 8.05% to 8%. The revised rates are applicable from March 5, 2025. In February, the bank reduced the interest rate on fixed deposits for select tenures by up to 65 basis points (bps) effective February 14, 2025.

Aaditya Thackeray on Tuesday demanded the dismissal of the Devendra Fadnavis-led government and imposition of President's rule in Maharashtra in view of the «deteriorating» law and order situation in the state. He was speaking to reporters here in the wake of the resignation of state minister and NCP leader Dhananjay Munde, days after his close aide Walmik Karad was named as the mastermind in the Beed sarpanch murder case. He said only Munde's resignation was not sufficient considering the law and order situation in the state. Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog village in Beed, was abducted, tortured and murdered on December 9 last year allegedly for attempting to stop an extortion bid targeting an energy company in the district. Talking to reporters, Thackeray said, «Resignation (of Munde) is not enough. The government should be dismissed and President's rule should be imposed in the state.» The former minister also cited recent instances of crime against women like the rape of a 26-year old woman in a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus in Pune and the setting ablaze of a 17-year-old girl in Mumbai. «Law and order situation in the state has been deteriorating since the last three years. If the government is not dismissed, who will come to Maharashtra for investment, how will citizens be safe?» he asked.

Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday asked civil accounts services officials to work towards making the government's annual accounts more approachable and user-friendly. Addressing the 49th Civil Accounts Day event here, Sitharaman lauded the Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS) officers, led by the Controller General of Accounts (CGA) for the «silent technological revolution» in which states are finding a lot more ease of operation and ease of getting their government business done by adopting the public financial management system (PFMS). «I would also like you to examine, in consultation with the CAG, whether it would be possible to make the annual accounts more approachable and user-friendly and allow citizens to analyse easily and generate customisable and simpler reports,» Sitharaman said. She said that since a lot of digital integration has already taken place with the states, more research can be carried out based on the data set available with the CGA. «If you're able to make the report a lot more user-friendly, that itself can generate a lot of interest in the work that you do,» the Minister said.
