security students Justice Courts Colleges Abhijit Gangopadhyay, first HC judge to join politics after resigning, leaves behind a chequered record
Abhijit Gangopadhyay (retired) was the 'hero' of job seekers and victims of the alleged recruitment scam. He earned the moniker of people's judge for his frequent run-ins with the Trinamool Congress government and for his scathing verdicts against it. He was also involved in an unsavoury incident with fellow judges, prompting intervention from the Supreme Court. The unsavoury incident began with Gangopadhyay ordering a CBI probe on a writ petition last September by an MBBS aspirant who contended that students who did not belong to the Scheduled Tribes category were securing admissions in the state's medical colleges using fake certificates. However, a division bench of justices Soumen Sen and Uday Kumar stayed the verdict the same day, in an unusual turn of events. Justice Gangopadhyay, however, heard the matter and held the division bench's order 'illegal'. He accused justice Sen of misconduct and said he was 'acting on behalf of some political party in the state'. The SC intervened and transferred the case to itself. While becoming the first sitting judge of a higher court to join a political party by resigning from active duty, Gangopadhyay has raised questions on judicial ethics and code of conduct for judges. «Who will trust his judgements now? It makes mincemeat of the code of conduct for judges,» Supreme Court advocate Prashanth Bhushan posted on X.

Recent court decisions have chipped away at that framework, with players now allowed to profit off their name, image and likeness and earn a still-limited stipend for living expenses beyond the cost of attendance. Last month’s decision by an NLRB that the Big Green players are employees of the school, with the right to form a union, threatens to upend the amateur model.

WASHINGTON : Presidential contenders Donald Trump and Nikki Haley will face off in the Washington, D.C., Republican primary on Sunday, a small-stakes contest that could be one of Haley's best shots to score a win over the former president. The United States' capital city only sends 19 out of 2,429 delegates to the Republican National Convention in July, where the nominee is formally selected. COST Dreams students Universities social Schools Colleges Ivy League whisperers: Why high-end education consultants are in huge demand from Delhi to Dhanbad
students, dreaming of Harvard and Yale, with parents in tow, step into a rather unimpressive building nearby. They come from as far as Amritsar, Dhanbad and Delhi. They make their way to the sixth floor where an amiable-looking, grey-haired, bespectacled man waits for them in his three-room office. Viral Doshi, they believe, has the key to their favourite undergraduate destination—the Ivy League. The kids are often just 14 years old. When they are in Class IX, they come to Doshi, one of the most sought-after consultants for US college admissions in India, to entrust their next four years to him. These years will be spent in crafting a student life that will tick all the boxes in an application form to a top American college. Doshi’s four-year package costs anywhere between Rs 4 lakh and Rs 7 lakh. “Applying to universities is not a cookie-cutter process,” says Doshi. “Each application requires a lot of time and attention to detail as a kid’s career is at stake.” He starts by getting to know a student—their favourite subjects and interests. He puts them to a psychometric analysis to crosscheck their strengths and weaknesses. He then sits them down and advises on areas they should focus on and maps out a possible career path.
