Indian stock market: This month’s meltdown in India’s smaller stocks is being termed as a buying opportunity by some investors despite the securities regulator’s warnings of a potential bubble. Perceived as key beneficiaries of the South Asian nation’s 8%-plus economic growth, shares of smaller firms are seen staging a comeback after a selloff that’s pushed down the Nifty Smallcap 250 Index almost 10% since Feb. 27.

Muted revenue growth in the December quarter (Q4CY23) has prompted large US banks to slow down their IT-related expenditure. Data compiled by Antique Stock Broking shows that six large US banks' average technology spending growth softened to 5.7% in Q4CY23 from 6.4% in Q3CY23. On an aggregate basis, these banks reported low single-digit revenue growth of 1.8% year-on-year in the quarter, a sharp deceleration from 9% in the previous quarter.

I take out a notebook and start to write. I recognise the cautious, unsteady gait. It is me at the age of 4. I have to start writing to know where I am going. And a short story begins — one which, perhaps, could turn into a chapter for a novel. But for now, I must follow those tiny feet to see what awaits them. In a novelist or poet's life, months — in many cases, years — go by before a significant image takes hold of his or her mind. And as he or she starts to write, the aperture-setting and focal length of the image shifts, and it becomes clearer and clearer. By the end of a year or two, he or she has a newly minted poem or novel.
