Awami League absent from the political stage following the 5 August 2024 political changeover, the two long-standing allies, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), appear to be drifting apart as they vie for dominance ahead of the upcoming elections. The BNP has been trying to distance itself from the JeI to gain more support from secular and international communities. This move has led to internal disagreements within the BNP, as some leaders still see value in maintaining ties with the JeI. Additionally, the JeI has been focusing on its own political agenda, which sometimes conflicts with the BNP's goals. Supporters of both parties have been particularly active on social media, exchanging harsh words and fueling the growing hostility between them.

markets Waters Strategy community Experts Universities reports LA wildfires' danger deepens as 'do not drink tap water' alerts ring; Here's why
Los Angeles Department of Water and Power: «Do not drink or cook with the tap water… Do not treat the tap water yourself.» This alert, aimed at Pacific Palisades and surrounding neighbourhoods affected by the Palisades Fire, is part of a series of advisories stemming from the growing wildfires that have already ravaged the region, reported America's NPR. The growing concern? Wildfires like the ones tearing through Los Angeles can dangerously compromise local drinking water systems, a problem experts say is becoming more common as wildfires intensify. According to Andrew Whelton, a professor of civil engineering at Purdue University who has studied wildfire-related water contamination, the damage can be severe. «They will find contamination,» Whelton explained. «The question is how high is it? Where is it? What parts of the communities will have to have restrictions,» he told the American broadcasting organisation.

Pope Francis expressed his sadness over the devastation caused by the recent wildfires in California, offering spiritual support to the victims in a telegram sent to the Archbishop of Los Angeles. «Saddened by the loss of life and the widespread destruction,» the pope conveyed his «spiritual closeness» to those affected, according to Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, reported the Associated Press. Among the most tragic losses were houses of worship, including the Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center, which was destroyed by the flames. Cantor Ruth Berman Harris, along with three others, risked their lives to rescue Torah scrolls from the temple as the fire approached. «It’s the heartbeat of any Jewish community,» Berman Harris of the Torah told the Associated Press. Her quick action, despite road closures, saved the sacred texts, but the synagogue itself was lost. «The flames were getting closer,» she explained, recalling how a nearby congregant called her to alert her about the danger. The temple, a cornerstone of the community for over 80 years, was reduced to a few walls and empty space. «There’s absolutely nothing except for a few walls and the empty space,» said Melissa Levy, the synagogue's executive director. Nevertheless, the AP report noted that many congregants have visited the site to say their farewells to a place where they celebrated family milestones and faith, reported the Associated Press.

markets Remark community Freedom country shock Equality Quite shocking: Shashi Tharoor on Maharashtra Minister Nitesh Rane's "EVM" remarks
Shashi Tharoor on Saturday condemned Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane's remark on EVMs, describing it as «shocking» and contrary to the inclusive values upheld during India's freedom struggle. Stating that targeting any particular community is wrong, Tharoor asserted that everyone is an equal citizen of the country and that's the only way for the country to progress. Speaking to ANI, Tharoor said, «This kind of thing is quite shocking. In our country, we really have to understand the basic lesson of the freedom struggle, which is that when one set of people said that religion is the basis of their nationhood. They went away and created Pakistan. Mahatma Gandhi onwards, our leader said we have fought for the freedom of everybody. We will create a country for everybody, we will write a constitution for everybody, and everybody will live here with equal rights.»

Congress aims to reconnect with these traditional supporters, particularly in slum areas. “Minority-dominated constituencies such as Mustafabad, Seelampur, Okhla, Babarpur, Chandni Chowk, Matia Mahal, Ballimaran and Gokulpuri have consistently supported us through the years,” a party official explained. “This explains why we secured substantial votes during the previous assembly and Lok Sabha elections. We have already declared candidates for most of these constituencies to ensure sufficient time for making the constituents aware of our party's guarantees.” The party is emphasizing its commitment to addressing issues affecting these communities, particularly regarding underdeveloped infrastructure and inconsistent water supply in slums. Congress is also targeting constituencies where it received a substantial vote share in the 2020 elections, including Badli, Gandhi Nagar, Kasturba Nagar, Hari Nagar, Seelampur, Jangpura, and Bawana.
