PM Narendra Modi, Joe Biden may try to sort out civil nuclear irritants
Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden will discuss possible steps to overcome differences on civil nuclear issues when they meet in New Delhi on September 8, according to people familiar with the matter, as India's nuclear liability law remains a concern for the American nuclear industry since the nuclear deal was signed in October 2008. The American side is exploring options on how to work with India's nuclear liability law, said the people. During Prime Minister Modi's visit to the US in June, both sides underscored the important role nuclear energy plays in global decarbonisation efforts and affirmed nuclear energy as a necessary resource to meet climate, energy transition and energy security needs. North Korea stages tactical nuclear attack drill
North Korea conducted a simulated tactical nuclear attack drill that included two long-range cruise missiles in an exercise to «warn enemies» the country would be prepared in case of nuclear war, the KCNA state news agency said on Sunday. KCNA said the drill was successfully carried out on Saturday and two cruise missiles carrying mock nuclear warheads were fired towards the West Sea of the Korean peninsula and flew 1,500 km (930 miles) at a preset altitude of 150 meters. Pyongyang also said it would bolster its military deterrence against the United States and South Korea. South Korea's military said the claim of success could be an exaggeration as «not all of them succeeded,» Seoul's Yonhap News reported, citing a senior official at the Joint Chiefs of Staff. KCNA also reportd that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited Pukjung Machine Complex, which produces marine engines, and a munitions factory to stress the importance of strengthening Pyongyang's naval forces. «He affirmed that a future plenary meeting of the Central Committee of the WPK (Worker's Party of Korea) would set forth an important modernization of the complex and the development direction of the shipbuilding industry,» a KCNA statement said. It did not specify the date of his visit. The latest missile test came just after the joint annual exercises between South Korea and the United States, known as Ulchi Freedom Shield, came to a close on Thursday. It featured air drills with B-1B bombers. North Korea has been stepping up its military deterrence against Washington and Seoul and has criticized last month's summit agreement between the two on improving military cooperations. KCNA said on Aug.

PM says cyber crimes can have social, geopolitical implications; need global cooperation to deal it
Modi has said while seeking global cooperation to deal with cybercrimes. In an exclusive interview with PTI, he said the World Bank has estimated that cyber attacks could have caused losses of around USD 5.2 trillion to the world during 2019-2023, but their impact goes beyond just financial aspects into activities that are deeply worrying.Read the full interview here He said these can have social and geopolitical implications. «Cyber terrorism, online radicalisation, use of networked platforms to move funds from money laundering to drugs and terrorism — are just the tip of the iceberg,» he said. Modi said cyberspace has introduced an entirely new dimension to the battle against illicit financial activities and terrorism. «Terrorist organisations are using technology for radicalisation, moving money from money laundering and drugs into terror funding, and capitalising on emerging digital avenues such as the dark net, metaverse, and cryptocurrency platforms to fulfil their nefarious aims,» he said. Stressing the need for taking the cyber threats very seriously, the prime minister said one angle of their adverse impact is the financial losses they cause. Further, he said, cyber attacks can also have implications for the social fabric of nations. Modi said the spread of 'deep fakes' can cause chaos and loss of credibility of news sources.
