Century-old Titanic newspaper found in grandmother's wardrobe, sold for just Rs 3,800
This discovery, unearthed by Hansons Auctioneers in Lichfield, Staffordshire, captures poignant moments from the immediate aftermath of the tragedy that claimed over 1,500 lives. The Daily Mirror's front page from that day features a headline declaring, “One of the thousands of tragedies which made the Titanic wreck the most horrible in the world’s history.” Accompanying this are images of two women in Southampton – the departure port of the ill-fated ship – anxiously awaiting news of survivors. RMS Titanic, hailed as the largest and “unsinkable” passenger ship at the time, sank on April 14, 1912, after striking an iceberg in the North Atlantic. The disaster unfolded swiftly, with the ship going under in less than three hours, revealing a tragic shortfall in lifeboats for the approximately 2,220 people on board.

NASA decision against using a Boeing capsule to bring astronauts back adds to company's problems
NASA's announcement Saturday that it won't use a troubled Boeing capsule to return two stranded astronauts to Earth is a yet another setback for the struggling company, although the financial damage is likely to be less than the reputational harm. Once a symbol of American engineering and technological prowess, Boeing has seen its reputation battered since two 737 Max airliners crashed in 2018 and 2019, killing 346 people. The safety of its products came under renewed scrutiny after a panel blew out of a Max during a flight this January. And now NASA has decided that it is safer to keep the astronauts in space until February rather than risk using the Boeing Starliner capsule that delivered them to the international space station. The capsule has been plagued by problems with its propulsion system.

Mumbai man recently fell victim to a scam where he ended up paying Rs 61,000 for a date gone wrong at The Godfather Club in Andheri West. The incident has brought attention to a broader swindle involving dating apps and fancy restaurants, leaving several men financially drained and humiliated. The modus operandi involves matching on dating apps like Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, and OKCupid, followed by an expensive meet-up that turns out to be a financial trap. Activist Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj shared the details of this scam on social media platform X. Taxi operators' protest in Goa to continue through weekend
tourist taxi operators attached to the Manohar International Airport at Mopa in North Goa have decided to continue their agitation, despite an assurance from Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for a high-level meeting with them on Monday. Amit Sawant, one of the taxi operators' leaders, told PTI that they welcomed the CM's assurance about a meeting on Monday, but asserted that the strike will continue till their demands are met. The tourist taxi operators, protesting since Thursday, have pressed for six demands, including stoppage of «illegalities» in the transportation business and the withdrawal of the counter of app-based cab aggregator Goa Miles at the airport. The protesters were seen camping near the Shree Bhagwati temple at Pernem throughout the night on Friday, their second day here since they went on a strike.

Quick-commerce vs e-commerce: Ready for the new pricefight in town?
ecommerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart by matching their prices across groceries and fast-selling general merchandise, triggering a price war in the home delivery space. This is a departure from the earlier pricing strategy of quick-commerce players who typically charged 10-15% premium over average ecommerce marketplace prices for instant deliveries, industry executives said. The strategy now is to win consumers from large ecommerce at a time when urban shoppers increasingly prefer faster and scheduled deliveries, they said.

'Reliance's capex pace in its new energy biz slow'
Reliance Industries' pace of investment in its new energy business seems slow, with cumulative investment at $2 billion so far against a plan of investing $10 billion in the first three years, Kotak Institutional Equities said in a report on Friday. Since it is a new foray and initial learnings need to be made, the pace of capital expenditure (capex) will gradually rise, the report added. Reliance forayed into new energy business in June 2021 with the launch of wholly-owned subsidiary Reliance New Energy (RNEL). During FY24, RIL invested ₹8,000 crore in solar energy through RNEL. Out of this, ₹6,900 crore went into Reliance New Solar Energy (RNESL) which «will commence the first train of module and cell manufacturing in FY25,» Kotak said.

Has e-commerce boom really hampered the growth of brick-and-mortar retail?
Narendra Modi's BJP came to power. As then-secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (Dipp), Kant was presiding over a stakeholder discussion on whether multi-brand retail should be allowed in India. Over a decade since, Piyush Goyal has, yet again, highlighted his government's concerns over the growth of ecommerce in India — that there will be social disruption, there is predatory pricing in ecommerce, and the number of mobile stores in the country has declined over the past 10 years. He is concerned — and rightly so — about the fate of millions of small retailers and kirana stores in the country. The point that I made to Kant in 2014 still stands: ecommerce offers consumers a much wider variety of products, whether coloured socks, numbered swimming goggles or air-purifiers. It benefits both sellers and buyers. Customers in Tier-2 and -3 towns access a wider variety of products online, without relying on someone to go to a metro to purchase it. Sellers find buyers across the country.
